"House Committee Withdraws Subpoena for Mueller"

WASHINGTON (AP) — A House committee investigating the Justice Department’s handling of the Jeffrey Epstein sex trafficking case has withdrawn a subpoena to former FBI Director Robert Mueller, citing the state of his health

The House Committee investigating the Justice Department's management of the Jeffrey Epstein sex trafficking case has withdrawn a subpoena directed at former FBI Director Robert Mueller due to health concerns. The decision came after the committee was informed of unspecified health issues that would prevent Mueller from testifying, as stated in a committee announcement.

Mueller had been scheduled to appear on Tuesday for a deposition, following a subpoena issued last month by Rep. James Comer, chairman of the House Oversight Committee. However, the health complications prompted the committee to retract the subpoena closely before the scheduled appearance. Reports from The New York Times indicated that Mueller's family disclosed he had been diagnosed with Parkinson's disease in the summer of 2021, which has affected his ability to speak clearly.

Robert Mueller served as the FBI director from 2001 until 2013, appointed during George W. Bush’s presidency. Under Mueller's leadership, the FBI transformed into a national security and intelligence-gathering agency, adapting to the evolving threats of the post-9/11 era. After his resignation in 2013, he was appointed as special counsel in 2017 to oversee the investigation into potential coordination between Donald Trump’s 2016 presidential campaign and Russian interference in the election.

During the investigation, Mueller's team uncovered extensive efforts by Russian operatives to influence the election in favor of Trump and secured multiple criminal charges and convictions against Trump's associates. However, the investigation concluded without sufficient evidence to establish an illegal conspiracy between the Trump campaign and Moscow, leading to a mixed reception regarding its findings.

Since the conclusion of the investigation, Mueller has been relatively silent about the proceedings, with his most notable public appearance being his testimony before Congress in July 2019. This testimony attracted considerable media attention due to his halting and sometimes stilted manner of speaking, raising concerns about his communication abilities even then.

Last month, Rep. Comer and the House Oversight Committee issued subpoenas to Mueller alongside several other former law enforcement and government officials. They sought testimony concerning their possible roles in the lengthy investigation into Epstein, the wealthy financier who was found dead in August 2019 while awaiting trial on sex trafficking charges, with his death ruled as a suicide by authorities.

Parkinson’s disease is a progressive neurological disorder that impacts movement control, often beginning with tremors and leading to symptoms such as slow movement, shuffling gait, stiff limbs, balance difficulties, and slurred speech. While there is currently no cure for Parkinson’s disease, various treatment options are available to help manage symptoms and maintain quality of life.
