VILNIUS, Lithuania (AP) – On Wednesday morning, a series of powerful explosions were reported in the suburbs of Vilnius, Lithuania's capital, following a fire that erupted in several rail cars loaded with liquefied natural gas. The incident raised concerns among local residents as the blasts could be heard throughout the area, prompting police to respond swiftly to the situation.
According to the fire and rescue department, one individual sustained injuries due to the incident. The fire produced large columns of smoke that were visible across Vilnius, leading authorities to recommend that residents in the vicinity remain indoors to protect themselves from potential hazards related to the smoke and the ongoing emergency response.
Interior Minister Vladislavas Kondratovicius addressed reporters, providing insights into the likely cause of the fire. He indicated that preliminary investigations suggest the blaze may have resulted from a violation of occupational safety conditions. However, he emphasized that a thorough investigation would be conducted to explore all possible explanations surrounding the incident.
The rail carriages involved in the fire are reported to belong to the Polish company Orlen, which has operations in the region. The involvement of a major company highlights the potential implications for both local safety and regulatory practices concerning the transportation of hazardous materials like liquefied natural gas.
As the emergency services worked to contain the fire and safeguard the area, public safety officials stressed the importance of adhering to safety protocols when dealing with such volatile substances. The situation remains under close observation as authorities continue to assess the damage and the potential impact on the surrounding environment and community.
