"Nova Scotia Opposition Pushes for Lower Power Bills"

HALIFAX — Nova Scotia opposition parties say they will pressure the government to lower power bills as the legislature’s fall sitting opens today

HALIFAX – As the fall sitting of the Nova Scotia legislature opens today, opposition parties are gearing up to apply pressure on the government to reduce power bills. The Progressive Conservative government has remained largely reticent regarding its specific legislative agenda.

In response to a proposed rate hike by Nova Scotia Power, the Opposition New Democratic Party (NDP) plans to introduce legislation aimed at lowering power bills by 10 percent. This move comes as part of a broader strategy to address the high cost of living that has been a significant concern for residents.

Furthermore, the NDP intends to present a bill focused on protecting consumer information. This initiative follows a cyberattack earlier this year, which resulted in the theft of sensitive data, including social insurance numbers, from Nova Scotia Power. Such measures aim to bolster consumer confidence in the provincial power utility and safeguard personal information against future breaches.

The third-placed Liberals have also voiced their commitment to reducing power bills, emphasizing it as one of their key priorities this session. They plan to push the government not only on energy costs but also on overall spending measures and the impact of the escalating cost of living for Nova Scotians.

This legislative session begins against the backdrop of a significant fiscal update released just one day prior. The government’s update projected a record deficit of $1.2 billion, marking a more than 70 percent increase compared to the estimates outlined in the previous February budget. This unprecedented financial situation has further intensified the urgency for opposition parties to advocate for policy changes that would ease the financial burden on residents.

As the House of Assembly reconvenes, the focus will increasingly shift to how the government plans to address these pressing issues, particularly in light of increasing public concern regarding energy costs and fiscal responsibility. The opposition parties appear poised to take a leading role in this debate, challenging the government to act swiftly to mitigate the challenges facing Nova Scotians.
