DAHER AL SAWAN, Lebanon (AP) - Riad Salameh, Lebanon's longtime former central bank chief who is widely blamed for the country's economic collapse, was released on bail of $14 million on Friday after spending a year in jail while awaiting trial on corruption charges. Salameh’s tenure lasted for 30 years, ending in 2023, amid significant scrutiny as European countries began investigating allegations of financial crimes linked to him.

The Lebanese populace largely holds Salameh accountable for the severe financial crisis that has plagued the country since late 2019. This crisis has resulted in depositors losing their life savings and a drastic devaluation of the Lebanese currency. Initially, Salameh was respected for his contributions to steering Lebanon's economic recovery following a 15-year civil war. He played a crucial role in maintaining financial stability during prolonged periods of political unrest and deadlock.

In recent months, Salameh has faced multiple criminal cases both within Lebanon and internationally. In September 2022, he was formally charged with the embezzlement of $42 million. Subsequent charges were leveled against him for illicit enrichment involving a property in France, which was purportedly rented as an alternative office for the central bank. Officials claimed he leased this apartment from his former romantic partner for approximately $500,000 annually.

While awaiting trial, the 75-year-old Salameh’s health has reportedly deteriorated. Prior to his release, he was hospitalized outside Beirut, raising concerns about his well-being. The court rejected Salameh's request to be released without bail, instead setting the bail amount at a significant $14 million. Additionally, a travel ban has been placed on him as part of the conditions of his release.

Salameh's lawyer, Marc Habka, addressed the media following the court’s decision, stating that his client’s health condition was poor. He expressed confidence in the strength of their case, asserting, "We have presented to the court all the evidence to prove his innocence." Habka emphasized the importance of transparency regarding the case, insisting, "It’s the right of the Lebanese people to know, in the end. If Riad Salameh is involved in the alleged crimes, he will be convicted. If other people are involved, they will be convicted, and if he is innocent, he will be acquitted."

This situation underscores the ongoing challenges facing Lebanon amid a time of deep economic turmoil and mounting public discontent. As the case unfolds, many are watching closely to see the implications for the country's financial governance and the accountability of its leaders.
