SOUTHPORT, N.C. (AP) – A tragic shooting incident occurred late Saturday evening when three individuals were killed and at least eight others wounded in Southport, North Carolina. The shooting took place around 9:30 p.m. at a crowded waterfront bar in the historic town, located approximately 30 miles (48 kilometers) south of Wilmington.
Investigation reports indicate that the assailant navigated a small boat close to the shore, halted briefly, and discharged multiple rounds into the crowd before fleeing the scene. This brazen attack shocked the local community, which was enjoying a busy evening by the water.
In the aftermath of the shooting, a U.S. Coast Guard crew, approximately half an hour later, spotted an individual matching the suspect's description at a public boat ramp on nearby Oak Island. The suspect was detained and subsequently handed over to Southport police for further questioning, as law enforcement agencies worked together to piece together the details surrounding the incident.
Authorities have yet to release the identity of the shooter or clarify the potential motives behind this attack. Multiple agencies are currently involved in the investigation, including the State Bureau of Investigation and the Coast Guard, as they continue to collect evidence and interview witnesses in the area.
