Daniel Milliea, a 15-year-old from the Elsipogtog First Nation in New Brunswick, has been passionate about music for as long as he can remember. He credits his family, particularly his mother, for instilling that love in him from before his birth. In an interview, Milliea shared that his mother played music on a speaker placed on her belly during her pregnancy, and she believes he responded to the rhythms by kicking. This early exposure to music set the foundation for his musical journey.
At the tender age of six, Milliea began playing the violin through a group in New Brunswick that offers after-school music programs. By eight years old, he transitioned to playing the viola, a larger instrument known for its deeper, warmer sound. He was immediately taken by its distinct tone and has devoted the last seven years to mastering it. Now a Grade 9 student, Milliea is preparing for a significant opportunity: to perform at the iconic Carnegie Hall in New York City. He achieved this milestone after placing third in the American Protégé International Talent Competition.
Describing the upcoming performance as a thrilling departure from his usual experiences, Milliea expressed excitement about playing at such a prestigious venue. He connects his deep love for music to his Mi'kmaq culture, where music holds a sacred significance. Milliea emphasized the importance of music in spiritual connection, noting that prayer and song are integral to his cultural practices. The support from his family has further fueled his passion, with his uncle, a traditional singer and drummer, expressing pride in his accomplishments.
Beyond the viola, Milliea enjoys playing the electric guitar, stating that music plays a crucial role in his life. He dreams of performing with orchestras globally and is actively honing his skills as a member of both the New Brunswick Youth Orchestra and the Moncton Youth Orchestra. His training continues at Sistema New Brunswick, the organization that first introduced him to music, which aligns with his aspirations to grow as a musician.
Swan Serna, one of Daniel's instructors at Sistema, spoke highly of his dedication to music and cultural traditions. Serna feels privileged to teach him and has witnessed his growth as a musician. He played a vital role in Milliea’s successful audition for the American Protégé International Talent Competition. Serna expressed joy and no surprise at Milliea’s ranking in the competition, emphasizing the young musician's strong desire to showcase his talent and explore his potential.
Milliea is set to perform at the American Protégé Winners Recital in December, where he will have the chance to present his musical abilities on a grand stage. This upcoming performance at Carnegie Hall marks a notable achievement in Milliea's burgeoning career and reflects his commitment to both his musical journey and his cultural roots.
