A former Cape Breton MLA and speaker of the house has died after a long battle with cancer

A former Member of the Legislative Assembly (MLA) for Cape Breton and Speaker of the House, Alfie MacLeod, has passed away after a prolonged struggle with cancer. His death has prompted widespread mourning across Nova Scotia, highlighting the impact he had on his community and the province at large.

Alfie MacLeod's political career began when he was first elected as a Progressive Conservative MLA for Cape Breton West in 1995. He held this position until 1998 and then returned to serve from 2006 until May 2009, and again from June 2009 until September 2013. Notably, while representing the Cape Breton West riding, he also took on the role of Speaker of the House between October 2007 and June 2009. Following the electoral boundary changes, he represented the newly formed riding of Sydney River-Mira-Louisbourg, continuing his service as an MLA until 2019.

Originally from Sydney River, Nova Scotia, MacLeod was not just a politician but also a respected community leader. His dedication was recognized by his colleagues and constituents alike. Premier Tim Houston expressed heartfelt condolences, stating that he joins all Nova Scotians in mourning the loss of this impactful leader. Houston emphasized MacLeod’s convictions and noted that his compassion, fierce loyalty, and advocacy for the underprivileged had significantly benefited many Nova Scotians over the years.

Premier Houston described MacLeod as a "man of conviction" with "a big heart," commending his ability to connect with people. He noted that thousands felt the effects of MacLeod’s generosity and willingness to stand up for those in need. “Alfie was a steadfast friend and a true community leader,” Houston remarked, summarizing the essence of MacLeod’s character and his contributions to the public life of Nova Scotia.

Furthermore, the Premier highlighted how MacLeod confronted his cancer battle—much like how he lived his life—with “courage, resilience and optimism.” This portrayal of MacLeod resonates with many who have admired his approach not only in politics but also in his personal life, showing a steadfast spirit even in the face of adversity.

Tragically, Alfie MacLeod was 69 years old at the time of his passing. His legacy as a dedicated public servant will likely endure, influencing future generations as they navigate the intersection of politics and community service. His unwavering commitment to the people of Nova Scotia serves as a testament to his character and enduring impact.
