BOSTON (AP) - A Harvard Medical School building has reopened while a very active investigation continues into a weekend explosion that authorities have confirmed was intentionally set off. The incident occurred early Saturday morning, when an officer responded to a fire alarm and encountered two individuals running from the Goldenson Building, which is part of the medical school’s Department of Neurobiology.
The explosion took place on the fourth floor of the Goldenson Building, leading to an immediate assessment by the Boston Fire Department. Investigators determined that the explosion was intentional, but no additional devices were found during a thorough sweep of the premises by police. Fortunately, no injuries were reported in connection with this incident.
Officials from Harvard Medical School stated that the specific section of the fourth-floor hallway affected by the explosion has since been cleared and is now fully operational. They reported that there was no structural damage to the building and all laboratories and equipment remain intact. This rapid response was crucial in maintaining the operational capacity of the medical school.
The investigation is currently being led by the FBI, which characterized the investigation as "very active." An FBI spokesperson refrained from providing further details on the case. Meanwhile, local police have released grainy images depicting two persons of interest, who were described as wearing face coverings and sweatshirts at the time of the explosion. This has raised concerns about security and the safety of campus facilities.
In the backdrop of this investigation, President Donald Trump has recently focused on Harvard University, targeting it with a series of investigations coupled with significant cuts in funding. This scrutiny follows the administration's push for changes to the university's policies and governance structure, reflecting a broader tension between the university and the federal government. The recent explosion adds another layer of complexity to the already charged atmosphere surrounding Harvard.
The Harvard Medical School incident raises further questions regarding safety protocols at educational institutions, especially those housing sensitive research laboratories. As the investigation unfolds, authorities are under pressure to ensure the safety of personnel and the integrity of ongoing research within the facility.
