The Downtown Halifax Business Commission (DHBC) is actively working to alleviate the winter blues by introducing a series of light shows aimed at spreading cheer during the shorter days of the season. This initiative marks the return of festive light displays in Grafton Park, designed to brighten up the downtown area of Halifax.
On Friday, the DHBC kicked off the inaugural light show of the winter season with a special projection honoring Remembrance Day. This tribute illuminated the facade of the historic Halifax Memorial Library, strategically located at the intersection of Spring Garden Road and Grafton Street. This event not only celebrates the significance of Remembrance Day but also sets the tone for the ongoing winter festivities.
The light projection show series is scheduled to run until January 18, 2026, featuring a total of seven distinct shows that will encompass a variety of seasonal and culturally themed visuals. These shows are designed to captivate audiences and provide a sense of joy and community during the cold months. Each light show will continue until 11 p.m., with adjustments to the start times as the sunsets occur earlier leading up to the winter solstice.
The DHBC emphasizes that the goal of the program is to “bring beauty and light into Downtown Halifax during the darkest months.” This initiative is an effort to enhance the vibrancy of the city and encourage both residents and visitors to engage with the downtown area during the winter season.
In addition to the light shows, the program includes a variety of light installations at several parks throughout the downtown core. Notably, a 28-foot illuminated tree will be on display at Peace and Friendship Park, serving as a striking centerpiece for the winter festivities. Winter-themed decorations will also be placed around the downtown area to further enhance the festive atmosphere.
The DHBC has provided a comprehensive resource for those interested in experiencing the light shows and installations. For a complete list of installations and the specific dates of the upcoming light shows, individuals are encouraged to visit the DHBC website.
Overall, the return of the light shows and festive decorations in Downtown Halifax serves as a beacon of hope and joy during the winter months, highlighting the community's resilience and creativity in combating seasonal blues.
