DUBAI, United Arab Emirates (AP) — Dubai International Airport (DXB), recognized as the world’s busiest airport for international travel, has already welcomed 70.1 million passengers in 2023, as reported by airport officials on Wednesday. This significant surge in passenger numbers emphasizes Dubai's crucial role as a key hub for East-West travel in the global aviation sector, highlighting the urgent need for the ambitious $35 billion project to develop a substantial five-runway facility at Al Maktoum International Airport, located within Dubai World Central.
Currently, Al Maktoum International Airport is hosting the biennial Dubai Air Show, which has witnessed major aircraft orders from both Emirates, the long-haul carrier, and its low-cost sister airline, FlyDubai. These acquisitions are anticipated to drive substantial expansions in the route networks operated by these state-owned airlines. Paul Griffiths, CEO of Dubai Airports, stated, “These record-breaking results reflect the continued strength of Dubai’s aviation and tourism sectors. Yet, it also reinforces the importance of what comes next. The vision for DWC goes beyond capacity expansion — it represents the reimagining and evolution of the entire travel experience.”
Dubai International Airport (DXB) serves as the operational hub for the long-haul airline Emirates, which plays a pivotal role in the network of state-owned entities collectively known as "Dubai Inc." The expansion of Al Maktoum, or DWC, is projected to spur a major real estate growth within this sheikhdom, along with developments in its southern areas. Plans are in place to shift airport operations from DXB to DWC, situated approximately 45 kilometers (28 miles) away from the existing airport.
The city of Dubai has rapidly become an attractive destination for tourists, complemented by a real estate boom and record tourism numbers. Nevertheless, the city is currently facing challenges associated with rising traffic congestion and high living costs, which have placed pressure on both Emirati citizens and the expatriate workforce that supports the local economy.
Last year, Dubai International Airport recorded an all-time high of 92.3 million passengers, showcasing an increase from 86.9 million in 2023, while 89.1 million passengers were reported in 2018, which was the previous peak before the pandemic. The airport facilitated 66 million passengers in 2022, demonstrating significant post-pandemic recovery. As of the end of September this year, DXB reported rolling 12-month passenger numbers of 93.8 million, indicating a strong likelihood of surpassing last year’s record.
This announcement comes as Dubai positions itself for continued growth in its aviation sector, with expansions set to enhance its global connectivity and reinforce its status as a leading travel destination.
