NEW YORK (AP) – Melanie Moore, the operator of the Ohio-based Cincy Book Bus, has become one of hundreds of independent booksellers to receive a heartwarming holiday surprise—a check for $500 from renowned author James Patterson. This unexpected bonus arrives as a part of Patterson's initiative to support local bookstores during the festive season.
In a statement issued through Patterson's publisher, Little, Brown & Company, Moore expressed her gratitude, noting, “I’ve never taken a salary. All profits from the bookstore go to buy books for kids in need. This gift from James Patterson will be my very first paycheck!” Her heartfelt acknowledgment underscores the significant impact such support can have on independent booksellers, especially those working towards a noble cause.
For over two decades, James Patterson has been a pillar in the literary community, donating millions to various institutions including schools, libraries, and literacy programs. His commitment to enhancing literacy and promoting reading has earned him a respected place among philanthropic figures in the field. Since the inception of this holiday tradition, Patterson has routinely sent $500 checks to 600 independent booksellers nationwide, each selected based on recommendations from peers or patrons. The 2025 recipient list features booksellers like Katie Gabriello, social media coordinator for Whitelam Books in Reading, Massachusetts, and Kate Czyzewski, manager at Thunder Road Books in Spring Lake, New Jersey.
Patterson articulated his sentiment about the essential role independent booksellers play in society, stating, “I’ve said this before, but I can’t say it enough—booksellers save lives. What they do is crucial, especially right now. I’m happy to be able to acknowledge them and their hard work this holiday season.” His recognition of booksellers not only highlights their importance in fostering reading culture but also serves as a reminder of the challenges they face in today’s retail landscape.
As one of the most prolific authors in the world, Patterson's contributions extend beyond his own literary works. His influence in supporting the book community was formally recognized in 2015 when he received an honorary National Book Award medal for “Outstanding Service to the American Literary Community.” This accolade reflects his ongoing dedication to boosting literacy and ensuring that books remain accessible to all.
Through initiatives like these, Patterson continues to inspire and uplift those within the book-selling community. His commitment to supporting independent bookstores resonates deeply, especially during the holiday season, a time when community spirit and generosity are especially valued.
The gifts from Patterson not only provide financial support to booksellers but also serve as a source of encouragement and validation for their hard work and dedication toward promoting literacy and fostering a love for reading in their communities.
