"Winter Storm Warning: Snow and Winds Expected"

If you’ve been putting off accepting that it is getting colder and snowier, a potential storm this weekend will show you that winter is here to stay

As the weather transitions into the colder season, a significant storm is projected to affect the region this weekend, firmly establishing winter’s presence. Environment Canada has issued marine weather warnings for areas located along the southwest coast of Newfoundland, extending to northeastern Nova Scotia, including the Banquereau ocean bank.

This impending storm is expected to bring strong winds, with forecasters having issued a gale warning for these coastal areas. Wind speeds could reach as high as 35 knots, raising concerns about hazardous conditions at sea. The storm’s path is currently moving wet towards Nova Scotia, which raises the potential for blizzard-like conditions to develop across the region.

In anticipation of the impending weather, special weather statements have been put into effect for several counties, including Pictou County, Guysborough County, Antigonish County, Richmond County, Inverness County (south of Mabou), Inverness County (Mabou and north), Victoria County, Sydney Metro, and Cape Breton County. These areas may experience significant snowfall, with accumulations of up to 20 centimeters expected from Sunday into Monday.

In addition to heavy snowfall, northwesterly wind gusts could escalate between 70 to 90 kilometers per hour, further complicating travel and outdoor activities. Environment Canada has noted that the precise trajectory of the storm system remains uncertain, and that further warnings may be issued should the system track close enough to the coast. In any case, roadways across the province are anticipated to be snow-covered, with some areas projected to experience reduced visibility due to the adverse weather conditions.

While Halifax currently does not have any special weather statements or warnings in effect, forecasts suggest periods of light snow may commence as soon as Saturday night. Residents should remain vigilant and prepared for fluctuating conditions as the storm approaches.

As the winter weather pattern establishes itself, the community is urged to stay informed through official weather updates. Proper precautions and preparation can help ensure safety during this time of potential travel disruptions and heavy snowfall.
