Police in Rhode Island have detained a person of interest following a tragic shooting incident at Brown University that resulted in the deaths of two students and injuries to nine others. The shooting occurred on Saturday afternoon during final exams in a classroom on the university campus. In the aftermath of the incident, the campus was placed on lockdown, with students sheltering in place for several hours while emergency responders addressed the situation.
According to law enforcement officials, nine students sustained gunshot wounds and were transported to the hospital, with one in critical condition. The FBI confirmed that the suspect's arrest took place at a hotel in Coventry, approximately 20 miles (32 kilometers) from Providence, where Brown University is located.
As the investigation unfolds, authorities still have not recovered a firearm. Reports indicate that the shooter was armed with a handgun and discharged over 40 rounds of 9 mm ammunition. While the police have not located the gun, they have managed to recover two loaded 30-round magazines from the scene, according to an anonymous law enforcement official involved in the investigation.
In light of the incident, university officials announced the cancellation of all remaining classes and exams for the semester. Provost Francis Doyle issued a statement emphasizing the importance of providing care and support to the university community amid the sorrow, fear, and anxiety that has resulted from the shooting. Doyle assured students that those who choose to remain on campus would have access to necessary services and support resources.
On a broader scale, Connecticut Senator Chris Murphy, a prominent advocate for gun policy reform, voiced concerns regarding the slim prospects of new firearm regulations in the current political climate. Speaking on CNN's "State of the Union," Murphy criticized Republican leaders for their alignment with the gun lobby and expressed his intention to continue advocating for stricter gun control measures despite the challenges faced in the current Congress.
The impact of this devastating event ripples throughout the university community and raises urgent discussions about gun violence and safety on campuses nationwide. Brown University is now tasked with addressing the emotional and psychological needs of students and staff as they navigate this unprecedented crisis.
