DAR ES SALAAM, Tanzania (AP) — Five people have died after a helicopter crashed on Africa’s highest mountain, Mount Kilimanjaro, in Tanzania

DAR ES SALAAM, Tanzania (AP) — A tragic helicopter crash on Mount Kilimanjaro, Africa's highest peak, has resulted in the deaths of five individuals. The incident occurred on Wednesday evening during a medical evacuation mission aimed at rescuing patients from the mountain.

The crash took place on one of the most frequented climbing routes, specifically between the Barafu Camp and Kibo Summit, at an elevation exceeding 4,000 meters (13,100 feet). Among those who lost their lives were two foreign nationals who were being evacuated for medical reasons. Additionally, the fatalities included a local doctor, a tour guide, and the helicopter pilot.

Simon Maigwa, the regional police commander in Kilimanjaro, confirmed to reporters that the helicopter was operated by the Kilimanjaro Aviation company, which specializes in medical evacuation services among other aerial operations. As of yet, the company has not released any statement regarding the unfortunate accident.

Authorities are still gathering information, with police indicating that further details will be disclosed later. Following standard international safety protocols, the Tanzania Civil Aviation Authority announced on Thursday that an investigation has been initiated to ascertain the circumstances and probable causes behind the crash.

Accidents involving aircraft on Mount Kilimanjaro are uncommon. The last recorded incident occurred in November 2008, resulting in the deaths of four people. The recent crash raises concerns about aviation safety in this region, especially given the popularity of Mount Kilimanjaro as a trekking destination for tourists from around the world.

As rescue and recovery efforts are underway, the incident highlights the inherent risks associated with medical evacuations in challenging mountainous terrain. The local police and civil aviation authorities are expected to conduct a thorough investigation, which will be critical in understanding what went wrong and preventing future accidents in the area.
