Federal Funding Boosts Women's Hockey Tournament in CBRM

A major hockey tournament kicked off this past weekend, hosted by the Cape Breton Regional Municipality with thanks to some federal financial support

A significant hockey tournament has recently commenced in the Cape Breton Regional Municipality, garnering support through federal funding. This event highlights the growing importance of women's sports and aims to enhance community engagement and economic development in the region.

Sydney-Glace Bay MP Mike Kelloway has announced a generous federal contribution of $250,000 aimed at facilitating the Cape Breton Regional Municipality's (CBRM) hosting of the IIHF U18 Women’s World Hockey Championship. This prestigious tournament is taking place in two primary locations: Membertou and Sydney.

The financial support is intended to assist both the CBRM and its collaborative partner, The Cape Breton Blizzards, in various essential preparations. This includes venue readiness, effective event coordination, and strategic marketing efforts to attract participants and spectators alike.

The tournament, which kicked off on Saturday, is projected to draw thousands of visitors to the Cape Breton area, thereby stimulating local economic activity significantly. Kelloway emphasized that this championship serves as a celebration of young athletes and symbolizes the bright future of women’s hockey, fostering a sense of local pride and enhancing Cape Breton’s reputation as an inviting destination year-round.

As part of the championship, eight teams will compete in a total of 21 games over a span of seven days. The matches are scheduled to take place at the Membertou Sport and Wellness Centre and Centre 200, showcasing the talent and dedication of young female hockey players.

This initiative not only aims to promote youth athletics but also intends to leave a lasting impact on the community by positioning Cape Breton as a prominent location for future sporting events.
