HALIFAX – A French energy company, Q Energy France, is making moves to engage in Nova Scotia's emerging offshore wind sector. The company has recently signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) with the Nova Scotia Community College (NSCC) and The Pier research hub in Halifax. This collaboration aims to develop training programs for workers in the offshore wind industry over the upcoming years.
The provincial government is actively advocating for the Wind West project, which is anticipated to be a multi-billion dollar initiative. If completed in all its phases, this project could potentially contribute to approximately 25% of Canada's energy capacity. In preparation for this expansion, Q Energy, alongside its South Korean partner Hanwha Ocean, has submitted an application for pre-qualification to bid for offshore licenses, pending the government's upcoming formal call for proposals.
NSCC is already equipped with a wind turbine technician course, and there are plans to expand its training offerings to meet the demands of the growing industry. Q Energy's CEO, Junu Lee, expressed a firm belief in the partnership's potential, emphasizing that training the workforce is essential whether or not his company secures an offshore project. He indicated that while the commitments would be contingent on the success of securing projects, he remains optimistic about the firm’s chances of selection.
