"Five-Year-Old Boy and Dad Released from ICE Detention"

Five-year-old Liam Conejo Ramos and his father, who were detained by immigration officers in Minnesota and held at an ICE facility in Texas, have been released following a judge’s order

Five-year-old Liam Conejo Ramos and his father have been released from an Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) facility in Texas after being detained in Minnesota. Representative Joaquin Castro of Texas confirmed their return to Minnesota, stating that they were released following a judge's order. The father and son had been detained on January 20 in a suburb of Minneapolis and subsequently transferred to a detention center located in Dilley, Texas.

Katherine Schneider, a spokesperson for Rep. Castro, revealed that Castro personally picked up Liam and his father from the Dilley facility on Saturday night and accompanied them back to Minnesota on Sunday. Following their repatriation, the Associated Press reached out to the Department of Homeland Security seeking comments regarding the incident, but no response was immediately given.

The circumstances of Liam's detention drew significant public outrage, especially due to a poignant image of him in a bunny hat and Spider-Man backpack being surrounded by immigration officers. Allegations emerged from neighbors and school officials suggesting that federal immigration officers had used the young boy as "bait" to execute the detention, claiming they told him to knock on his own door so his mother would answer. This narrative was strongly denied by the Department of Homeland Security, which characterized those claims as an "abject lie," asserting that the father had abandoned his son in a running vehicle as he fled on foot.

During their flight back to Minnesota, Rep. Castro took the time to write a heartfelt letter to young Liam, praising his resilience. He explained to Liam how many people, including his family and school community, had been praying for his safe return and had taken actions to support his reunification with his family. Castro emphasized the importance of immigrants to the United States, stating that the nation’s strength and success come from its immigrant population and that Liam should feel at home there.

U.S. Senator Amy Klobuchar of Minnesota also welcomed Liam back on social media, expressing her relief that he was reunited with his family and emphasizing that children like Liam should be in school and surrounded by loved ones, rather than in detention. She urged for a cessation of ICE's actions, suggesting a need for reform in immigration enforcement practices.

The story of Liam Conejo Ramos and his father's detention highlighted ongoing debates surrounding immigration enforcement in the United States, particularly concerning the treatment of families and children. It sparked significant concern and activism among communities, advocating for the rights of immigrants and emphasizing the need for humane handling of detention cases to prevent similar situations in the future.
