SANTA CRUZ, Calif. (AP) — A remarkable act of bravery unfolded in Santa Cruz when surfers jumped into action to rescue six injured individuals from a capsized boat. The incident occurred on February 6 at Steamer Lane, a renowned surf spot along California’s Central Coast, where surfers were enjoying large waves.
The crisis began when a small motorboat collided with a wave, sending two adults and four children overboard. An incident report from the Santa Cruz Fire Department indicated that several passengers were not wearing life jackets, which heightened the dangers associated with the situation.
Vince Tuzzi, a local who spends nearly every day at the beach, described the moment he witnessed the boat capsize as one of the most alarming events he has ever encountered. Tuzzi was filming surfers when he noticed the fast-moving boat, and he quickly realized that disaster was imminent. Following the capsizing, around 10 surfers, including two just 14 years old, paddled out to assist the stricken passengers and successfully brought them to safety on their boards.
Among the surfers who participated in the rescue was Darryl “Flea” Virostko, who has won the prestigious Mavericks big wave competition three times. In an Instagram post, Virostko expressed his commitment to helping the stranded individuals as soon as he saw them go into the water. He recounted the emotional moment when he pulled the adult man onto his board while the man was calling out for his children.
The swift response of the surfers was crucial, as emergency crews arrived within minutes following the capsize. Harbor patrol boats and ambulances were dispatched to attend to the injured. According to fire officials, all passengers were taken to the hospital and are currently recovering from their injuries.
In recognition of their heroic actions, Santa Cruz Fire Chief Rob Oatey met with some of the surfers this week to personally thank them for their bravery. The collective effort displayed by the surfing community during this crisis is a testament to their solidarity and willingness to protect one another in times of need.
This incident has not only highlighted the dangers of boating during turbulent sea conditions but also the courage and camaraderie that exist among surfers in Santa Cruz. The actions taken that day serve as an inspiring reminder of the impact that quick thinking and teamwork can have in emergency situations.
