"Heritage Day: Service Disruptions & Activities"

It’ll be above 0 C and the sun will be out

On February 16, Nova Scotia will celebrate its 12th Heritage Day, a provincial holiday marked by ideal weather conditions with temperatures above 0°C and sunny skies. This pleasant climate presents a perfect opportunity for families to come together, whether they choose to stay indoors or partake in outdoor activities.

As with any holiday, there will be several service disruptions that residents and visitors should be aware of. Below is a comprehensive overview of what services will be affected on this day.

Shopping

Most grocery stores will remain closed on Heritage Day. However, two exceptions include the Gateway Meat Market located in Dartmouth and Kingswood Market in Hammonds Plains, which will operate during holiday hours. Major shopping centers such as the Halifax Shopping Centre and Mic Mac Mall will also be closed for the day.

All Nova Scotia Liquor Corporation (NSLC) stores will not be open on this holiday. Nevertheless, craft beverage producers may keep their taprooms or storefronts operational, offering a chance to explore local products.

City Services

City services will be minimally impacted during the holiday. Notably, the City’s 3-1-1 Contact Centre will be closed, limiting access to non-emergency city services on Monday.

Residents should also note that there will be no curbside garbage, green bin, recycling, or bulky item collection on that day. Additionally, both the Otter Lake Waste Management Facility and the Municipal Recycling Facility will be closed. On a positive note, on-street paid parking will be available for free on Monday, providing an excellent opportunity for those who wish to enjoy the city.

Halifax Transit Bus and Ferry

Halifax Transit will adjust its services to accommodate the holiday schedule. Buses will operate on a holiday service timetable, ensuring limited but continued transit options. For ferry users, the Alderney Ferry will run every 30 minutes, beginning with the first trip departing from the Alderney Ferry Terminal at 7:30 a.m. The last trip will leave from the Halifax Ferry Terminal at 11:45 p.m. However, it's important to note that there will be no Woodside Ferry Service on this day.

Activities

For those looking to engage in activities during Heritage Day, all Halifax Library locations will be closed, restricting access to books and community programs. Many city recreation facilities will also not be operational; however, Cole Harbour Place will open its doors at noon.

Fortunately, the weather is favorable for outdoor festivities. The Halifax skating oval is set to open, providing a perfect venue for free skating throughout the day, encouraging residents and visitors to take advantage of the lovely weather. Whether participating in community activities or simply enjoying the sun, Heritage Day in Nova Scotia promises to be a delightful celebration.
