SAN JOSE, Costa Rica (AP) Authorities in Costa Rica have initiated an investigation into the murder of a U.S. citizen, Kurt Van Dyke, who was reportedly killed during a robbery. According to the Judicial Investigation Agency, the incident occurred on Saturday in Puerto Viejo, a town located on the countrys Caribbean coast, where Van Dyke was a resident and local hotel owner.
The investigation revealed that Van Dyke, a 66-year-old man, was found dead with signs of strangulation and multiple stab wounds. An autopsy is currently underway to determine the exact cause of death and further details surrounding the circumstances of his murder. Reports indicate that two armed men, at least one of whom was carrying a firearm, entered his home and threatened both Van Dyke and a female companion. During this violent encounter, the assailants allegedly stole various items from the house as well as a vehicle. Fortunately, the woman involved managed to escape without sustaining serious injuries.
Van Dyke is not only known for his role as a hotel owner in Puerto Viejo but is also part of a notable surfing family from California. His family background is marked by a strong connection to the surfing culture; a 2021 obituary of his mother, Betty Van Dyke, highlighted her contributions as a pioneer among early female surfers. Furthermore, his first husband, Gene Van Dyke, was recognized as a prominent surfer in northern California.
This tragic incident has drawn attention to issues of safety and crime in tourist areas of Costa Rica. The investigation continues as authorities seek to apprehend the suspects involved and ensure the safety of residents and visitors alike. Local communities are likely feeling the impact of this crime, especially in a locality known for attracting tourists and surfers from around the globe.
The murder of Kurt Van Dyke raises serious concerns about the increasing violence that can affect expatriates living in foreign countries, as well as the safety of tourists visiting popular destinations. The Costa Rican government faces pressure to enhance security measures in order to regain the trust and confidence of both citizens and visitors, ensuring the safety of those who have chosen to make Costa Rica their home or vacation destination.
As the investigation unfolds, it remains crucial for local authorities to address these safety concerns while maintaining a supportive environment for the thriving tourism industry, which is a vital component of the countryês economy. The legacy of the Van Dyke family in the surfing community will likely remain in the memory of many, and this incident serves as a sobering reminder of the vulnerabilities that can exist in seemingly peaceful surroundings.
