The Canada-Ukraine Foundation is urging the Canadian government to match private donations to bolster humanitarian efforts in Ukraine, as the fourth anniversary of Russia's full-scale invasion approaches. Executive Director Valeriy Kostyuk highlighted the ongoing need for essential supplies, stating that while the foundation has successfully raised over $100 million, the demand for food, water, medical equipment, and power generators continues to rise.
Kostyuk expressed hope that the federal government would commit to matching all private donations made to the Canada-Ukraine Foundation in 2026. His comments come as Canada reflects on the impact of the invasion, which has resulted in millions of displaced individuals and widespread destruction across Ukraine.
With the anniversary approaching on February 24, Kostyuk pointed out that the recovery efforts in Ukraine must begin even while the war is still ongoing. He emphasized the importance of Canadian support for these efforts, indicating that a commitment from the federal government would significantly enhance the foundation's ability to assist those in need.
Since the conflict escalated in February 2022, Ottawa has been a significant contributor, providing billions of dollars in aid to Ukraine, including approximately $6.5 billion allocated for military assistance. This financial support underscores Canada's dedication to supporting Ukraine through its ongoing crisis and its commitment toward building a better future for the war-torn nation.
The calls from the Canada-Ukraine Foundation come as pro-Ukrainian demonstrators recently gathered at a rally on Parliament Hill in Ottawa, demanding continued support and attention to the plight of Ukrainians affected by the war. Events like these illustrate the solidarity among Canadians who are advocating for sustained efforts to aid Ukraine during this challenging period.
The situation remains urgent as the need for humanitarian assistance continues to grow. The Canada-Ukraine Foundation's appeal to the federal government reflects a broader sentiment in the country about the need for immediate action and support for recovery initiatives. As the war rages on, organizations and communities across Canada are rallying to ensure that help reaches those in desperate need.
As the anniversary of Russia’s invasion draws near, the messages from Kostyuk and the foundation serve as a poignant reminder of the enduring hardships faced by Ukrainians and the critical role of international support in their struggle for recovery and resilience in the face of adversity.
