AMSTERDAM (AP) — Dutch authorities launched a manhunt Saturday for an individual caught on camera setting off an explosion outside a Jewish school located in the Buitenveldert district of Amsterdam. The local mayor, Femke Halsema, condemned the act as a cowardly attack on the city's Jewish community, emphasizing the growing fears and anger felt by Amsterdam's Jewish residents due to rising antisemitism.
A statement from City Hall indicated that the overnight explosion resulted in only limited damage to the outer wall of the school. This incident raised alarming concerns regarding the safety of Jewish institutions in the area, prompting an increased security response.
Mayor Halsema highlighted the urgency of the situation in her statement, asserting that a school should be a safe environment for children to learn, and asserting that Amsterdam itself must be a secure place for the Jewish community. Her comments reflect broader anxieties within the Jewish population regarding their safety in light of recent events.
The attack in Amsterdam follows a concerning trend, as security measures around Jewish schools and other locations have been heightened following a series of violent incidents. On Friday, there was a blast that caused a minor fire at the entrance of a synagogue in Rotterdam, and another explosion occurred near a synagogue in Liege, Belgium, heightening fears of targeted aggression.
In response to these threats, Dutch Minister of Justice and Security, David van Weel, expressed his concern on social media platform X, labeling the attacks as cowardly. Van Weel reiterated the government’s commitment to the safety of Jewish institutions and confirmed that investigations into the responsible parties are underway.
Authorities are now tasked with ensuring the security of Jewish communities following this string of attacks. The recent violence underscores a troubling atmosphere of antisemitism in Europe, prompting calls for action and solidarity with affected communities. As investigations continue, the hope remains that those responsible will be swiftly apprehended and that safety can be restored for Jewish residents in Amsterdam and other impacted areas.
