"Missile and Drone Strikes Hit Kyiv, Killing Four"

KYIV, Ukraine (AP) — A combined missile and drone attack on the Kyiv region killed at least four people and wounded at least 15 overnight into Saturday, according to the head of the regional administration for the Ukrainian capital

In a devastating overnight assault on the Kyiv region of Ukraine, a combination of missile and drone attacks has resulted in at least four fatalities and a minimum of 15 injuries, as reported by Mykola Kalashnyk, the head of the regional administration for the Ukrainian capital. Among the wounded, three individuals are in critical condition, with two undergoing emergency surgery.

The attacks targeted four districts in the Kyiv region, leading to significant damage to residential buildings, educational institutions, enterprises, and crucial infrastructure. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy reported that the primary objective of the strikes was the energy infrastructure of Kyiv, with Russia launching approximately 430 drones of various types along with 68 missiles during this operation.

These strikes occurred just days after the United States postponed peace talks between Russia and Ukraine, which were scheduled for the week, due to the escalating conflict in the Middle East. As tensions rise in the region, Russian support for its ally Iran has remained limited to vocal indignation without any direct action, highlighting a perceived decline in Moscow’s influence following recent geopolitical events.

Amidst the ongoing conflict, President Zelenskyy urged Western partners to focus on ramping up the production of air defense missiles, emphasizing the potential for Russia to exploit the Middle Eastern conflict to intensify its attacks in Ukraine. He stated, "We must be fully aware of the real level of the threat and prepare accordingly," calling for the development of missile systems capable of countering both ballistic and aerial threats.

Furthermore, Zelenskyy expressed Kyiv's anticipation of a significant drone production agreement with the U.S., which he proposed last year. This agreement aims to enhance Ukraine's drone capabilities in light of the threats exposed by the ongoing conflict with Russia, which continues to escalate with attacks and counterattacks across both sides.

Additionally, Zelenskyy criticized the U.S. government's recent decision to impose a 30-day waiver on certain sanctions against Russian oil, labeling it "not the right decision" while asserting that such concessions could provide Russia with around $10 billion to fund its military operations. He argued that this would not contribute to achieving peace in the region.

On the Russian side, reports emerged claiming that Ukrainian drones targeted an oil refinery and a port in the Krasnodar region, resulting in three injuries during the strikes at Port Kavkaz, a critical port for shipping liquefied natural gas and grains. Furthermore, drone debris caused a fire at the Afipsky oil refinery, although local authorities confirmed no injuries from that incident.

This week has seen a surge in claims from both Russian and Ukrainian officials about advances on the front lines, with Ukraine asserting gains in pushing back Russian forces while the Kremlin proclaimed progress in its invasion efforts. The situation remains tense as both nations continue to engage in military actions that result in civilian casualties and infrastructure damage.
