On January 31, 2023, Tuskegee University's men's basketball coach, Benjy Taylor, was handcuffed and forcibly escorted off the court during a game at Morehouse College. This incident has led Taylor to file a lawsuit against Morehouse College and two campus police officers, seeking more than $1 million in damages for the emotional and physical harm he claims to have suffered.
According to Taylor's attorney, Harry Daniels, the lawsuit outlines various types of harm suffered by Taylor, including financial, reputational, emotional, and physical damages. Daniels asserts that the incident has caused Taylor significant stress, elevated blood pressure, hair loss, and the potential for lasting reputational consequences, which he compares to a "scarlet letter" that may follow Taylor throughout his career.
The legal action arises from a situation during the game where members of the Morehouse football team were reportedly taunting the Tuskegee players from the sidelines. Concerned for the well-being of his players and anticipating that the situation might escalate, Taylor approached one of the campus police officers for assistance, requesting the removal of the taunting players. Instead of addressing the issue, Officer R. Clark allegedly turned his back on the situation, and when Taylor insisted that security protocols be enforced as mandated by the Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SIAC), he was handcuffed and detained.
The game concluded with Morehouse winning 77-69, but the aftermath has drawn significant scrutiny. The SIAC reviewed the incident and subsequently fined Morehouse College, stating that the institution failed to meet the required security standards for hosting a sporting event. The conference issued a statement emphasizing the need for improved crowd control and the safe management of visiting teams and participants in the future.
Despite the SIAC's actions against Morehouse, attorney Daniels maintains that the impact on Taylor has been profound. He argues that not only has the incident harmed Taylor's physical and emotional health, but it has also diminished his ability to earn a livelihood for his family. Daniels highlights the long-lasting implications this detainment may have on Taylor’s professional reputation and income potential.
At the time of the report, Morehouse College had not responded to requests for comments regarding the lawsuit filed against them.
As this situation develops, it raises important questions about the enforcement of security protocols at sporting events and the responsibility of institutions to ensure the safety and well-being of all participants and staff.
