KYIV, Ukraine (AP) — A Russian drone attack on the city of Zaporizhzhia has resulted in the deaths of at least two individuals, according to a statement from Ukrainian officials. Ivan Fedorov, the head of the Zaporizhzhia region, confirmed that a man and a woman were killed, and two children were injured when a Russian drone targeted a private residence on Saturday morning.
This assault occurred just prior to anticipated talks between U.S. and Ukrainian officials, which were reported by Ukrainian state media to be scheduled later that same day in Miami. President Volodymyr Zelenskyy announced on Thursday that he had dispatched an official delegation to the United States, with the goal of revitalizing stalled U.S.-brokered negotiations aimed at putting an end to Russia’s ongoing invasion of Ukraine.
The trilateral discussions that involve Russia have yet to yield any significant progress on crucial matters and are currently on hold as the focus of international attention has shifted towards the conflict in the Middle East. Meanwhile, the White House has not confirmed any meetings scheduled with the Ukrainian delegation.
Zelenskyy articulated that key objectives for the U.S. visit include reinstating the trilateral negotiations and ensuring that Washington allows other NATO nations to acquire American weapons to supply to Ukraine. A senior official from the Kremlin indicated on Friday that a new round of U.S.-mediated discussions between Moscow and Kyiv may occur in the near future, with Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov expressing hope that the current pause in negotiations would be temporary.
Over the past year, numerous Western European officials have accused Russian President Vladimir Putin of stalling in negotiations while attempting to leverage his army's strength on the battlefield to capture additional territory in Ukraine, where Russian forces currently occupy approximately 20% of the country. The recent armed conflict that erupted in the Middle East on February 28, following Israeli and U.S. military actions against Iran, has further distracted the international community from the ongoing crisis in Ukraine.
Simultaneously, Russia is benefitting from a temporary U.S. waiver on oil sanctions, providing it with a financial boon. In contrast, Ukraine is facing a dire financial situation, grappling with a shortage of funds while still awaiting a €90 billion ($103 billion) loan that had been pledged by the European Union.
U.S.-Ukraine diplomatic engagement continues to evolve as tensions remain high, with both sides keenly focusing on the implications of military and financial support as well as the resumption of diplomatic negotiations aimed at resolving the ongoing conflict.
