LEBANON, N.J. (AP) – Tom Kean Jr.'s political lineage is deeply rooted in the history of New Jersey, stretching back to 1776 when one of his ancestors became the state’s first leader following the Declaration of Independence. The Kean family has had significant political representation, with Kean Jr.'s great-grandfather serving as a senator, his grandfather as a congressman, and his father as a governor. However, this impressive political pedigree may not shield Kean from the impending challenges of the midterm elections, as he finds himself among the most vulnerable Republicans in a year when Democrats are aiming to leverage President Donald Trump’s low approval ratings to regain control of the U.S. House of Representatives.
Currently representing New Jersey’s 7th Congressional District—a diverse area encompassing suburban communities and farming towns—Kean is on the frontline of a political battleground that has seen considerable shifts in voter allegiance. In recent midterms, Kean secured his position by defeating Democrat Tom Malinowski in 2022, following Malinowski’s victory over Republican Leonard Lance in 2018. As the current election cycle progresses, Kean is acutely aware of his district's competitive nature.
Former Congressman Leonard Lance remarked on Kean's recognition of the competitive landscape, stating, “I don’t think that Congressman Kean is taking anything for granted.” In recent years, the district has skewed slightly more Republican due to redistricting, which Kean hopes will bolster his appeal as he promotes the tax cuts enacted during Trump’s administration.
However, Kean faces the challenge of being affected by controversial elements of Trump’s agenda that have not resonated well with local constituents. One such issue is the Republican administration's attempt to convert a local warehouse into an immigration detention facility, which has faced legal opposition from both Democrats and a Republican-controlled town council. Additionally, Trump’s efforts to halt funding for a vital rail tunnel project have raised concerns among voters who rely on these transportation services.
To navigate the political landscape, Kean has opted for a low profile, avoiding in-person town halls that could lead to confrontational exchanges with constituents. Despite this, he remains cognizant of his proximity to Trump’s influence, which is illustrated by his social media posts thanking the president for his endorsement.
Since the days of former President Bill Clinton, midterm elections have historically shifted control of the House to the opposing party of the sitting president, placing individuals like Kean in a precarious position without the advantage of an active presidential campaign to drive voter turnout. This year, he is among 44 targeted lawmakers as Democrats seek to reclaim a majority in the House. The Democratic primary competition in his district is still developing with several candidates vying for their party's nomination.
Democrats have already begun their campaign against Kean, critiquing him on various fronts, including Trump’s tariffs, the rail tunnel situation, and the proposed immigration facility. In response, Kean expressed his commitment to finding a “workable solution” regarding the detention facility issue, while Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee spokesperson Eli Lake accused him of embodying the issues people dislike about Washington politics.
Supporters of Kean maintain that he is a trustworthy representative who has made significant contributions to his district. Campaign consultants assert that he is an independent leader who has advocated for the restoration of the state and local tax (SALT) deduction, facilitating tax relief for middle-class families, which is a pressing concern in New Jersey, where property taxes are among the highest in the nation.
Despite the challenges, Kean's supporters argue that the temporary changes to tax deductions will aid homeowners and alleviate affordability issues. Meanwhile, controversy surrounding the Gateway Tunnel project persists as Kean faces backlash over Trump’s attempts to limit federal funding which could hinder commuting options in his district.
Economic concerns and political tensions are palpable as Kean navigates the complexities of his re-election bid in a district that reflects broader national trends. Local residents express discontent towards wealthy political figures, indicating a desire for balance in representation. In handling criticism, Kean has chosen a different communication strategy, contrasting with former Congressman Lance, who actively engaged with constituents in person despite the potential for heated debates. As midterm elections approach, Kean's campaign will surely continue to adapt to the evolving political climate in New Jersey.
