A county sheriff's office in Maryland reported that a professional cornhole player, Dayton James Webber, who is a quadruple amputee, fatally shot a passenger during an argument. The incident took place while Webber was driving a car on Monday. The shooting involved a confrontation with a person seated in the front seat of the vehicle.
Dayton James Webber, 27, was subsequently arrested and charged as a fugitive from justice in Albemarle County, Virginia, as stated by the Charles County Sheriff’s Office. The authorities in Charles County are working to extradite him from Virginia, where he will face charges of first-degree murder, second-degree murder, and other related offenses.
As of the time of reporting, attempts to reach Webber for comment via an email address associated with him had not garnered a response. Webber, in a personal essay published in 2023 for the "Today" show, detailed his extraordinary life—a narrative that began when doctors amputated his arms and legs at just 10 months old to save him from a critical blood infection. He described the bleak prognosis provided by his medical team, which estimated only a 3% chance of survival at that time.
Despite these significant challenges, Webber rose to prominence as a professional cornhole player. Cornhole is a game where participants throw bean bags through a hole in a slanted wooden board, earning points for successful throws. His remarkable career in this niche sport has garnered attention, especially in light of his unique background.
Following the shooting incident, Webber reportedly pulled over the vehicle he was driving and asked two passengers in the back seat to help remove the victim from the car. The passengers declined his request, exited the vehicle, and subsequently flagged down nearby police officers. Webber, however, fled the scene while leaving the victim still inside the car.
Approximately two hours after the event, a resident in Charlotte Hall, a town situated about 10 miles (16 kilometers) from where the shooting occurred, reported the discovery of a body in their yard. Upon police arrival, they identified the victim as Bradrick Michael Wells, 27, from Waldorf, who was tragically pronounced dead at the scene.
The American Cornhole League issued a statement on their Facebook page acknowledging that they are aware of the allegations against Webber. However, the league refrained from offering further comments, citing the ongoing nature of the legal proceedings associated with the case.
