Florida Dems Celebrate Victory in Trump’s Backyard

ORLANDO, Fla

In Orlando, Florida, Democrats expressed renewed optimism following a significant special election victory in a district historically dominated by Republicans and notably located in President Donald Trump's home territory. Emily Gregory, a 40-year-old newcomer with a background in the fitness industry, emerged as the state's representative for District 87, which encompasses Mar-a-Lago, Trump's resort in Palm Beach.

In another key race, Democratic candidate Brian Nathan is leading a Senate campaign in the Tampa area, though the Associated Press has yet to call that contest as he remains within the state's automatic recount range. Gregory's election adds to a series of Democratic pickups of Republican-held seats since Trump assumed the presidency for a second term, offering hope for the party ahead of a critical midterm election, where control of Congress and numerous statehouses, including those in Florida, will be contested in November.

Florida Democratic chairwoman Nikki Fried commented on the election results, noting that the political tide can shift, stating, “The pendulum swings in both directions. Last night it swung hard in the state of Florida.” She emphasized the significance of winning in Trump's stronghold as a source of confidence for Democrats and remarked, “If we can win in Donald Trump’s backyard, we can win anywhere.”

Gregory, who aims to focus on pressing constituents' concerns such as rising insurance costs, groceries, and gas prices, expressed her commitment to addressing local issues rather than making the campaign primarily about Trump. She described her approach as rooted in understanding the needs of her community, stating, “I just see myself as very embedded in my community, very representative of District 87.”

Despite Trump's endorsement of her opponent, Jon Maples, and his active participation in the race by casting a mail ballot, Gregory prevailed. Trump publicly reiterated his support for Maples shortly before the election but has not yet commented on the election results. Fried lauded Gregory and Nathan as effective candidates able to navigate the evolving political landscape, linking their successes to the dissatisfaction with Republican strategies, including significant overspending on campaigns, which she argues is not resonating well with voters.

Gregory's win is particularly noteworthy as it represents a district that was previously held by a Republican who won by a significant 19 percentage points. Fried highlighted that Trump had carried the district by 11 points in the 2024 election. Although Republicans still maintain a stronghold in the Florida Legislature and are anticipated to retain the governor's office—following Ron DeSantis' landslide victory in his reelection—Fried insists that the political environment is changing, as evidenced by the recent results. She pointed out trends from two congressional special elections in 2025, where Democrats narrowed the typical electoral margins in strictly Republican areas.

In a response to the latest election outcomes, Ryan Smith, chief campaign strategist for Republican U.S. Rep. Byron Donalds—whom Trump supports for Florida governor—acknowledged the need for strategic reassessment, emphasizing their commitment to delivering results and defending the "Florida Dream" for voters.

Looking ahead, Gregory expressed enthusiasm about representing her constituents, including Trump, stating, “I should have a constituent service office available soon, and I would love to have a conversation. He’s welcome to call me, as I am his new state representative.” Her proactive stance reflects her determination to engage with all members of her district, regardless of political affiliation.
