On Friday, Israel's military announced it had carried out a series of strikes “in the heart of Tehran,” marking a significant escalation in the ongoing conflict with Iran. Smoke was visible rising from Beirut following these bombings, coinciding with U.S. President Donald Trump’s decision to postpone his threats regarding the obliteration of Iran’s energy plants, which stemmed from Iran's effective closure of the *Strait of Hormuz*.

Israeli forces have mobilized thousands of troops into Lebanon, with plans to gain control over the entire area south of the *Litani River*, located approximately 20 miles (about 30 kilometers) north of the Israeli border. The situation remains tense as the conflict continues to escalate, resulting in significant civilian casualties and displacement.

In a related development, Trump addressed the economy, facing a turbulent stock market, and extended the deadline for the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz until April 6. He mentioned that Iran had requested this grace period and indicated that negotiations were progressing well, despite Iran publicly denying any discussions with the Trump administration regarding a 15-point proposal aimed at resolving the conflict.

The ramifications of the war have been dire. The conflict has resulted in over 1,900 deaths in Iran and nearly 1,100 in Lebanon. Additionally, 18 individuals have died in Israel, along with three Israeli soldiers who were killed in combat in Lebanon. The U.S. military has also reported 13 casualties, alongside numerous civilian deaths throughout the Gulf region, leading to the displacement of millions in both Iran and Lebanon.

As the situation develops, various incidents continue to emerge. A Thai-flagged cargo ship, the *Mayuree Naree*, which had previously come under attack from Iranian forces in the *Strait of Hormuz*, has reportedly run aground. Iranian media sources stated that the ship was abandoned by its crew after the attack on March 11, and three of its mariners remain missing.

In New Zealand, the government is preparing for potential fuel shortages as a consequence of the ongoing war. Finance Minister Nicola Willis introduced a four-tier plan designed to address future fuel scarcity. The plan includes measures for restricting gasoline purchases, prioritizing fuel for essential services, and exporting limitations based on domestic fuel stocks. Currently, New Zealand is in phase one of this plan, the lowest level, with no existing restrictions on gasoline use or purchasing.

As tensions continue to rise in the region, the international community watches closely, bracing for possible further developments stemming from these military actions and the resulting geopolitical ripple effects.
