HAMILTON 0 Some of Canada’s biggest musical acts are headed to the Hammer. The Juno Awards will take place at Hamilton’s TD Coliseum this weekend, celebrating homegrown music over two nights. This year promises to be notable, featuring several exciting performances and milestones.
JONI MITCHELL'S RETURN TO CANADA
Joni Mitchell, one of Canada’s most iconic artists, is set to make a rare public appearance in her home country to accept a lifetime achievement award on Sunday. The singer-songwriter, who was born in Alberta and raised in Saskatchewan, last attended the Junos in 1981 when she was inducted into the Canadian Music Hall of Fame. Since then, she has not participated in any public events in Canada after a tribute concert for her 70th birthday in 2013.
Mitchell’s health will determine if she performs during the ceremony, where Sarah McLachlan and Allison Russell are scheduled to pay tribute to her. Mitchell has faced health challenges, including a brain aneurysm in 2015, which kept her out of the public eye for some time. She has gradually returned to performing, including a memorable appearance at the Grammys in 2024. With this award, Mitchell will become the second artist to receive the Junos’ lifetime achievement award, following Anne Murray in 2023.
COULD THE WEEKND BE CROWNED ABSENTEE KING OF THE JUNOS?
The Weeknd, born Abel Tesfaye, is a record-breaking artist who could make history by becoming the most awarded artist in Juno history. He currently holds 22 Junos and is in the running for five additional awards this year. The reigning record-holder is Anne Murray, with 24 awards. The Weeknd is up for four awards on Saturday, which precedes the broadcast celebration.
While the Weeknd often receives accolades, he hasn’t attended the Junos ceremony since 2016. Two wins this year would put him on par with Murray, while a third win would break her record.
EXTRA SHOW, LIGHT ON THE AWARDS
This year, only four awards will be presented during the televised Sunday night ceremony: fan choice, breakthrough artist or group, group of the year, and contemporary R&B recording of the year. Major awards such as album of the year and artist of the year will be announced during a separate gala on the previous day. Notably, the Weeknd, along with Justin Bieber and Tate McRae, are expected to skip the celebrations.
Despite the scarcity of awards on Sunday, the show promises an exciting lineup of performances from artists like Arkells, The Beaches, and Daniel Caesar, who will receive a special international achievement award. Comedian Mae Martin will host the festivities.
A FETE FOR NELLY FURTADO
Nelly Furtado will be honored this year as she is inducted into the Canadian Music Hall of Fame. A tribute featuring performances from Alessia Cara, Jully Black, Shawn Desman, and Tanya Tagaq will celebrate her contributions to Canadian music. Furtado, known for her hit "I’m Like a Bird," has a long-standing relationship with the Junos; she previously hosted the event in 2007 and again in 2024.
In October, Furtado announced she plans to retire from live performances "for the foreseeable future," although she intends to continue writing music. She reflected on her career, expressing gratitude for turning her passion into a successful endeavor.
CAMERON WHITCOMB ASCENSION
Cameron Whitcomb, a rising star in the Canadian music scene, has garnered significant recognition with five Juno nominations, tying him with the Weeknd this year. He stands out as one of the few confirmed attendees at the event and has gained popularity after participating in “American Idol” in 2022.
Whitcomb’s nominations include fan choice prize, album of the year for his debut "The Hard Way," and single of the year for "Options," a track focused on the struggles of addiction and recovery. He also earned nominations for breakthrough artist of the year and country album of the year, indicating a bright future ahead.
This event showcases the evolution and celebration of Canadian music, with both seasoned and emerging artists taking center stage to mark a prominent weekend in the industry.
