A joyful family reunion turned into a crisis when Lilia Avoutova, a 78-year-old grandmother from British Columbia, found herself stranded in a coma in China. Her family, unable to afford the exorbitant costs to bring her home, is now in a desperate situation. Avoutova, who is of mixed Chinese and Ukrainian heritage, arrived in Kunming, China, on March 4, along with her husband, Savout, 79, but their planned visit to her birthplace in Xinjiang never occurred due to her sudden medical emergency.
Two days after arriving, Lilia suffered a cerebral hemorrhage and stroke, leading to her being placed in an induced coma at a hospital in Kunming. Her daughter, Elena Lanteigne, describes the heartbreaking situation, expressing the emotional toll it has taken on her family. Lanteigne and her brother have been in Kunming for almost three weeks, struggling to cope with the reality of their mother's condition.
Elena explained that communicating with doctors has been challenging due to language barriers, necessitating the use of Google Translate to understand her mother’s medical status. The situation is further complicated by the fact that Lilia and her husband did not purchase travel medical insurance, resulting in daily ICU costs of approximately $1,000. This financial burden has left the family nearly depleted of their savings.
With no means to cover the expenses, the family has looked into options for transporting Lilia back to Canada. Air ambulance costs have been quoted at around $400,000, a sum they cannot afford. An alternative plan involves using stretcher service on a commercial flight, which would cost approximately $108,800. However, this option comes with significant risks, as high altitudes could exacerbate Lilia’s cerebral hemorrhage. Their family doctor has advised waiting one or two months to allow Lilia's condition to stabilize before any travel plans can be safely made.
Despite the grim circumstances, Elena remains hopeful and is encouraged by signs that her mother is showing limited responsiveness, such as briefly opening her eyes and moving her hand. Elena has been sharing messages and audio recordings from Lilia's four grandchildren to keep her spirit alive, telling her that they miss their beloved "babushka." This connection to family has been crucial as the situation remains dire.
The emotional strain of this ordeal extends beyond the medical concerns; financial worries also loom large. To alleviate some of the burden, Elena set up a GoFundMe page, which has garnered more than $16,000 in support—almost 70 percent of their fundraising goal. She expressed her gratitude for the overwhelming response from the community, describing it as a testament to the collective human spirit and kindness people extend to one another in times of need.
This family’s tumultuous journey emphasizes the importance of caring for loved ones and the unpredictable nature of life. Lilia Avoutova has spent her life nurturing relationships and being a source of warmth and kindness for others. As her family navigates this difficult time, they cling to hope and the shared love that brings them together, even amid adversity.
