PARIS (AP) - French police successfully prevented a suspected bomb attack outside a Bank of America building located in the 8th arrondissement of Paris. On Saturday, authorities reported that one suspect was detained while another managed to escape the scene, prompting immediate action from law enforcement.
The national anti-terrorism prosecutor’s office, known as PNAT, has launched an investigation into various alleged terrorism-related offenses. The allegations include attempted damage through fire or other dangerous means, the manufacture of incendiary or explosive devices, and the possession and transport of such devices with the intent to cause harm. Additionally, the suspects are being investigated for involvement in a terrorist criminal association.
A police spokesperson confirmed that one individual had been placed in custody during the operation. French Interior Minister Laurent Nuñez praised the swift response from a Paris police prefecture unit, highlighting their role in thwarting what could have been a violent terrorist act that occurred overnight.
Nuñez emphasized the ongoing vigilance by the French government, stating, “Vigilance remains at a very high level.” He commended the extensive efforts of the security and intelligence forces operating under his authority, especially given the current international climate that raises security concerns.
According to RTL radio, which cited police sources, the alarming incident took place in the early hours of Saturday morning. Police officers became suspicious when they observed two individuals carrying a shopping bag near the Bank of America premises. One suspect was reportedly attempting to ignite a device using a lighter, while the second suspect fled the scene before they could be apprehended. The Paris police prefecture has chosen not to comment further on the specifics of the situation.
In light of recent global tensions, particularly following the outbreak of the Iran war, French authorities have increased personal security measures for prominent figures from the Iranian opposition. Additionally, security around various sites that could be potential targets, including those associated with U.S. interests and the Jewish community, has been heightened, as noted by Minister Nuñez earlier this week.
