The Halifax Mooseheads faced a tough defeat against the Chicoutimi Saguenéens, falling 2-1 in game two of their playoff series at Centre Georges-Vézina. Despite showcasing a strong performance for the majority of the game, a third-period breakdown ultimately cost the Mooseheads the match, allowing the Saguenéens to extend their series lead to 2-0.
During the first period, the Saguenéens lost two players due to injuries and penalties. Maxim Schäfer left the game after suffering an upper body injury following a collision with Malik L'Italien along the boards. Furthermore, Émile Ricard received a five-minute major penalty and a game misconduct at 19:19 for kicking Daniel Walters during a faceoff. This incident provided the Mooseheads with an opportunity on the powerplay, and Quinn Kennedy capitalized at 19:51 by scoring his first goal of the playoffs, assisted by Shawn Carrier, giving the Mooseheads a 1-0 lead.
However, the momentum shifted in favor of the Saguenéens when they nearly tied the game early in the third period. The goal, which was initially counted, was subsequently disallowed as officials ruled that it involved a kicking motion. This pivotal moment would set the stage for Chicoutimi’s comeback.
At 12:01 in the third period, Jordan Tourigny scored for the Saguenéens, tying the game at one. Just two minutes later, Maxim Massé sealed the game with a decisive goal, slipping the puck past Halifax goaltender Nick Cirka. This goal not only handed Chicoutimi the lead but also proved to be the game-winner, demonstrating a remarkable turnaround for the Saguenéens in the final stretch of the match.
In recognition of their performances, Maxim Massé was named the first star of the game, contributing with a goal and an assist. Jordan Tourigny, with his crucial goal, received the second star, while Halifax’s Nick Cirka earned the third star for his efforts, making 30 saves despite the loss.
The Mooseheads are set to return to action on Tuesday, March 31, as they host game three of their first-round playoff series against the Chicoutimi Saguenéens at the Scotiabank Centre. This upcoming match will see the return of Halifax goaltender Owen Bresson, who had previously served a five-game suspension for fighting during a game against the Saint John Sea Dogs on March 13.
Puck drop for game three is scheduled for 7 p.m., and fans can listen to live coverage on 95.7 NewsRadio. The pre-game show will begin at 6:30 p.m., hosted by Garreth MacDonald, setting the stage for what promises to be an exciting playoff battle as the Mooseheads look to rebound from their recent loss.
