Rush's Triumphant Return with New Drummer at Juno Awards

HAMILTON — Rush frontman Geddy Lee says the band’s late drummer Neil Peart would be “very pleased” with their comeback performance at Sunday’s Juno Awards

HAMILTON – In an emotional comeback performance, Rush graced the stage at the 2026 Juno Awards, marking their first performance at an awards show since 1978. The legendary Canadian prog-rock band opened the ceremony with a stirring rendition of "Finding My Way," a track from their debut album.

During this significant moment, Rush introduced their new drummer, Anika Nilles, who is stepping in for the late Neil Peart. Peart, known for his remarkable drumming and lyrical contributions to the band, passed away in 2020, leaving a void that many believed to be impossible to fill. Geddy Lee, the band's frontman, expressed confidence that Peart would be "very pleased" with their choice of Nilles, a talent who first gained recognition through her YouTube performances in the 2010s.

Backstage, Lee reflected on their performance, noting that while Peart is "irreplaceable," the power of music endures even through the hardest tragedies. He stated, "Music lives beyond tragedy, beyond anything that can happen in your life." Lee, along with guitarist Alex Lifeson, reassured fans that the spirit of Rush continues through their music and that bringing in a fresh talent like Nilles is a fitting tribute to Peart.

To honor Peart during the performance, clips of him playing were displayed on a big screen behind the band. As Lee shared his thoughts on this tribute, he conveyed his belief that Peart would appreciate their connection with Nilles—a drummer who has not only been easy to work with but has also brought a youthful energy to the group. He described her as a fantastic person who inspires them, calling her a "bonus" to their musical endeavors.

After having rehearsed with Nilles for about a year, the band expressed a sense of comfort and excitement in their collaboration. Lee remarked on how Nilles has begun to express her personality through her drumming, which is a delightful aspect of their new dynamic. He believes that Peart would likely give a "thumbs up" to their decision, supported by her unique talents and enthusiasm.

As Rush plans to embark on a world tour titled the "Fifty Something" tour, fans eagerly anticipate how the band will evolve with Nilles in the lineup, despite the sorrow of losing their iconic drummer. The event at the Juno Awards not only celebrated the band's rich history but also symbolized a new chapter for Rush, demonstrating that their legacy continues to live on with music that resonates beyond sorrow.
