"France Links Arrested Suspects to Iran Bomb Plot"

PARIS (AP) — French authorities are investigating a suspected link to Iran after thwarting a bomb attack outside a Bank of American building in Paris on the weekend, the interior minister said Monday

French authorities are currently investigating a suspected connection to Iran after they successfully thwarted a bomb attack outside a Bank of America building in Paris over the weekend. The French Interior Minister, Laurent Nuñez, announced this development on Monday, stating that there are indications linking the incident to Iran. This suspicion arises from similarities between this attempted attack and other recent incidents across Europe, for which a pro-Iran group has claimed responsibility.

On Saturday morning, police in Paris observed two suspects carrying a shopping bag in the vicinity of the Bank of America located in the 8th arrondissement of the city. Following this observation, a total of three suspects were arrested, prompting the national anti-terrorism prosecutor’s office to initiate an investigation into potential terrorism-related offenses. The authorities believe that there is a “direct link” to Iran, as the “modus operandi is in every respect similar” to previous actions executed in the Netherlands and Belgium.

In the aforementioned incidents that occurred in the Netherlands and Belgium, claims were made by a pro-Iranian group that sought to connect the attacks to ongoing conflicts in the Middle East. This group, known on Telegram as Harakat Ashab al-Yamin al-Islamia, which translates to the Islamic Movement of the Companions of the Right, has also taken responsibility for an attack that happened last week in London, where four ambulances belonging to a Jewish charity were set ablaze.

Interior Minister Nuñez remarked on the intelligence operations typically carried out by Iranian authorities, emphasizing that they often employ proxies and subcontractors, usually comprised of common criminals, to execute actions aimed at U.S. interests, the Jewish community, or Iranian opposition figures. His comments highlight the strategic approach employed by Iranian agents in orchestrating targeted attacks.

As tensions have escalated internationally, particularly following the United States and Israel launching military operations against Iran on February 28, French authorities have heightened security measures around key individuals and sites. This includes increasing personal protection for notable figures from the Iranian opposition, demonstrating a proactive stance to safeguard against potential threats linked to the ongoing geopolitical conflict.

Overall, the thwarted attack serves as a stark reminder of the persistent risks posed by international terrorism and the intricate connection between regional conflicts and threats experienced in Europe.
