PRAGUE (AP) Czech police announced on Tuesday the apprehension of a foreign national who took responsibility for a Molotov cocktail attack on a Russian cultural center in Prague. This incident occurred late last week, specifically on Thursday.
The suspect reportedly surrendered to the authorities on Monday and admitted to planning the attack against the Russian House since the previous summer. The Russian House, which is funded by the Russian government, does not have diplomatic status in the Czech Republic.
According to police reports, the identity of the suspect, including his nationality, has not been disclosed, and further details regarding the investigation remain limited. Eyewitness accounts and photographic evidence revealed that the attack left one window shattered, while two other windows and a part of the wall were partially blackened by smoke. Fortunately, the structure did not ignite during the attempted attack.
The Russian cultural center, which plays a role in organizing cultural, educational, and scientific programs, also offers courses in the Russian language. Igor Girenko, the director of the center, stated in an interview with the Russian state news agency Tass that the assailant threw six Molotov cocktails at the building, of which three did not detonate.
The incident has provoked strong reactions from Russian officials. Maria Zakharova, a spokeswoman for the Russian Foreign Ministry, denounced the attack as “a barbaric act” and emphasized the necessity of securing Russian institutions and their personnel in the Czech Republic. In response, the Russian embassy in Prague has formally requested that Czech authorities enhance security measures for Russian institutions amid concerns for safety.
In light of the event, the Czech Foreign Ministry has also condemned the assault, affirming its commitment to safeguarding the stability and security of cultural institutions within its borders.
