In 2010, police began a search for missing women that led to the discovery of human remains along a barrier island parkway near Gilgo Beach, New York. Authorities quickly suspected that the remains could belong to a serial killer due to the nature of the discoveries. Over the years, investigators utilized DNA analysis and various clues to identify the victims, establishing connections between remains found at different locations on Long Island.
The timeline of events provides a detailed look into the investigation. It began on November 20, 1993, when two hunters found the body of Sandra Costilla, 28, in North Sea, a hamlet in the Hamptons. Costilla had moved to New York City prior to her death. Subsequently, on April 20, 1996, the partial remains of Karen Vergata were found on Fire Island, with her identity remaining unknown until 2022, when advancements in DNA analysis facilitated identification.
As the investigation unfolded, more remains surfaced. On June 28, 1997, a woman's remains were discovered inside a plastic tub in West Hempstead, New York; she was later identified as Tanya Jackson, a former U.S. Army veteran. Other significant discoveries included the skeletal remains of Valerie Mack, found in September 2000, and Jessica Taylor, whose remains were located on July 26, 2003. Both women had ties to sex work, linking them further to the investigation.
The situation escalated with the disappearances of several women. On July 9, 2007, Maureen Brainard-Barnes vanished after meeting a client. This was followed by the disappearance of Melissa Barthelemy on July 10, 2009, and both women's cases were linked to the ongoing investigation.
The investigation took a turn when Shannan Gilbert vanished on May 1, 2010. Her disappearance triggered police searches along Ocean Parkway. Following her disappearance, a series of grim discoveries were made. On December 11, 2010, police uncovered the remains of Barthelemy, which marked the start of a series of findings. On December 13, 2010, additional bodies of Costello, Brainard-Barnes, and Waterman were found in a quarter-mile stretch of the same area, confirming fears of a serial killer at work.
In the following years, multiple remains continued to be discovered along Ocean Parkway. On March 29, 2011, parts of Taylor’s remains were found, along with findings associated with other victims, including the identification of additional remains that linked to a two-year-old girl, Tatiana Dykes, daughter of Tanya Jackson.
After years of stagnation, the case moved forward in January 2022, when a task force was formed to reassess the Gilgo Beach killings. Significant developments happened on July 13, 2023, when law enforcement arrested Rex Heuermann for the murders of three women: Costello, Waterman, and Barthelemy. Key evidence included mobile phone location data tracing Heuermann’s interactions with the women.
As the investigation deepened, on January 16, 2024, Heuermann was charged in the case of Brainard-Barnes after a hair found with her remains showed genetic similarities to his wife’s DNA. Further charges continued to pile up, including those related to the slayings of Costilla and Taylor in June 2024, leading to public attention regarding his alleged role in the string of murders.
Final developments included Heuermann’s outright admission of guilt. On April 8, 2026, he pled guilty to murdering seven women, acknowledging his culpability in killing an eighth. His sentencing is slated for June 17, 2026, marking a significant moment in a long-lasting investigation that has captivated and horrified communities in New York and beyond.
