SAN JUAN, Puerto Rico (AP) — Authorities in the Bahamas are actively searching for a missing U.S. woman after her husband reported she fell overboard during a boating trip. The woman, whose identity has not yet been disclosed by the police, was traveling with her husband in an 8-foot motorboat from Hope Town to Elbow Cay on Saturday night.

According to Bahamian police, the incident occurred when the woman reportedly fell overboard along with the boat keys, leading to the engine shutting off. Subsequently, strong currents carried her away, and her husband lost sight of her. He managed to paddle to shore and alerted local authorities early on Sunday morning about the incident.

A woman named Karli Aylesworth has come forward, stating that her mother, Lynette Hooker, is the missing woman. Aylesworth expressed doubts regarding the circumstances of her mother’s disappearance, suggesting that it was unlikely for Lynette to simply fall off the boat. She also mentioned that the couple had a volatile relationship and a history of conflicts, particularly when alcohol was involved.

Brian Hooker, identified by Aylesworth as her stepfather, took to Facebook on Wednesday morning to express his heartbreak over the incident. He referred to it as a tragic boat accident that occurred in unpredictable seas and high winds, which ultimately caused Lynette to fall from the dinghy near Elbow Cay. He stated, “Despite desperate attempts to reach her, the winds and currents drove us further apart,” emphasizing his continued commitment to searching for her.

The U.S. Coast Guard has been involved in the efforts, having been asked by Bahamian officials for assistance on Sunday. They deployed an HC 144 aircraft to aid in the search; however, no signs of the missing woman have been found. The Coast Guard reported that they have not received any further requests for help related to this case.

Bahamian police confirmed that both search operations and investigative efforts are ongoing. These efforts span marine, land, and aerial areas, with support from drone technology and professional divers to enhance the search.

Chief Troy Pritchard of Hope Town Volunteer Fire & Rescue, when contacted on Tuesday, declined to comment and referred all inquiries to the Bahamian police. The search for Lynette Hooker continues, with authorities working diligently to locate her in the waters off Elbow Cay.
