MEXICO CITY (AP) — Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum announced on Wednesday her consideration of potential sanctions against the government of Chihuahua, a state that borders Texas. This decision follows the involvement of CIA agents in an operation aimed at dismantling drug laboratories. Sheinbaum stressed that any security collaboration with the United States must be authorized by the federal government of Mexico.
Her remarks come in light of conflicting reports from various authorities regarding the recent death of two U.S. officials in a vehicle crash as they were returning from an operation in northern Mexico. This operation involved the destruction of a clandestine drug lab. A U.S. official, along with two additional sources who requested anonymity, confirmed the CIA’s involvement to the Associated Press on Tuesday.
During her morning news briefing, Sheinbaum asserted, "There cannot be agents from any U.S. government institution operating in the Mexican field." She highlighted that such actions do not conform to existing security protocols or the formal agreements made between Mexico and the U.S.
In the vehicle crash, two Mexican investigators also lost their lives. Mexican authorities indicated that the crash occurred while the convoy was en route from destroying drug labs operated by criminal organizations. Discrepancies between U.S. and Mexican officials regarding the details of the incident have brought attention to the increasing U.S. involvement in security operations within Mexico and the broader region.
Sheinbaum confirmed that while Mexican army personnel participated in the operation, the federal government was not informed of the presence of U.S. agents. She dismissed speculation that the incident marks the initiation of a new strategy by the Trump administration, which has previously called for enhanced action against Mexican cartels.
She has formally requested the U.S. ambassador to Mexico to provide all relevant information regarding the incident and expressed her intention to communicate with Chihuahua's Governor, Maru Campos. Sheinbaum emphasized, “It is very important that something like this not be allowed to go unaddressed.”
U.S. President Donald Trump has consistently proposed involvement in operations against Mexican cartels, a move that Sheinbaum has described as “unnecessary.”
The complexities of U.S.-Mexico relations were highlighted by this incident, reflecting the broader challenges of addressing drug trafficking, security cooperation, and sovereignty issues between the two nations. The potential consequences of unauthorized military or intelligence operations by foreign agencies in Mexico could have significant implications for diplomatic relations moving forward.
