"King Charles III Shines at Gala, Fundraises $3M+"

NEW YORK (AP) — Spring gala season tends to draw celebrated artists and fashion icons to star-studded black-tie fundraisers around New York City

On Wednesday evening, New York City hosted the King's Trust Global Gala at Christie's auction house, a star-studded black-tie fundraising event attracting high-profile names like Lionel Richie and Anna Wintour. This year’s gala was particularly notable as it marked the first appearance of King Charles III since its inception five years ago. His brief three-and-a-half-minute speech created a palpable excitement among attendees, reflecting the King's intention to support his nonprofit organization that helps young individuals find employment opportunities.

The atmosphere was electric even before the guests entered the venue. British cosmetics entrepreneur Charlotte Tilbury made a special request to Martha Stewart, who was adorned in a sparkling blue dress, to convey to Charles that she wore “royal blue just for you.” Natasha Poonawalla, Executive Director of the Serum Institute of India, emphasized the anticipation surrounding the King's presence, stating, “everyone’s been waiting for him.”

The event proved to be a tremendous success, with organizers reporting a record-breaking fundraising total of over $3 million. This was seen as a direct result of the monarch's appearance, bolstering the nonprofit's efforts to create an endowment for its projects in the United Kingdom and to strengthen connections in more than 25 other countries. The King’s Trust, which has impacted the lives of 1.5 million individuals globally through its education and employment initiatives, aims to uplift disadvantaged young people.

During his remarks, King Charles III highlighted the importance of reciprocity among the beneficiaries of the trust, who often return to assist others facing similar challenges. He quipped, “Only now do quite a lot of them actually admit they were started (here).” Edward Enninful, the former editor-in-chief of British Vogue and co-chair of the gala, remarked on the trust's influence in West London, sharing how it helped his family despite societal labels of being “not worthy.” He referred to Charles's attendance as a “glory moment,” stating, “He’s set the example that philanthropy matters.”

This year’s gala featured a more intimate gathering of around 160 guests, a shift from the large-scale events of the past. Unlike previous years, there were no musical performances, leading Richie to inform attendees that he would not be singing. The King humorously commented on this, suggesting that the Rock & Roll Hall of Famer “must gargle with port.” Notable attendees included supermodels Karlie Kloss and Iman, as well as actors Leo Woodall and Meghann Fahy, along with designers Donatella Versace and Stella McCartney.

Martha Stewart shared her own life journey, discussing how she built a successful media empire through scholarships and hard work. She acknowledged the ongoing challenges many face in securing quality jobs and education, adding that the gala was assembled to assist those individuals. This sentiment resonated throughout the evening, highlighting the shared commitment among attendees to uplift and empower the next generation.
