"Spirit Airlines Collapse: Travelers Seek Alternatives"

SEATTLE (AP) – The recently announced collapse of Spirit Airlines is likely to signify the end of an era for budget-conscious travelers. As the airline ceases operations, many passengers are left stranded, prompting other carriers to step in with offers to assist those affected.

In response to Spirit Airlines’ shutdown, various airlines that previously competed with Spirit are now providing “rescue fares,” which are reduced prices for new flights aimed at helping stranded customers reach their destinations. Airlines such as American Airlines, United Airlines, Delta Air Lines, JetBlue Airways, Frontier Airlines, and Southwest Airlines are participating in this initiative, with many of them offering capped or reduced ticket prices.

However, these special fares are available only for a limited time. For example, Southwest Airlines is permitting bookings at airport ticket counters only until Wednesday, May 6, while United Airlines has a window extending up to two weeks, which travelers can utilize for online bookings. American Airlines, Allegiant, Frontier, and Delta have similarly advertised discounted fares on the routes that Spirit once operated. Each airline has provided maps indicating overlapping routes, making it easier for passengers to find alternatives.

Bobby Schroeter, the chief commercial officer of Frontier Airlines, emphasized the significance of Spirit Airlines in expanding access to affordable travel, stating, “Spirit Airlines played an important role in expanding access to affordable travel and bringing more low fares to more people.” His comments reflect an understanding of the challenges faced by Spirit's customers during this difficult time.

Passengers seeking refunds for their Spirit Airlines flights can expect an automatic processing of refunds for any bookings made via credit or debit cards, as the airline prepares for an orderly wind-down of operations. Travelers who made reservations through third-party agencies must direct their refund requests to those agencies, while those who used vouchers, credit, or points will need to await developments in Spirit’s bankruptcy process.

For those unsure about the status of their refunds, the Department of Transportation (DOT) suggests reaching out to credit card companies to initiate a “chargeback” under the Fair Credit Billing Act for services not rendered. Furthermore, travelers who purchased travel insurance—either independently or via a credit card policy—are advised to check for coverage related to “insolvency” or “service cessation.” Filing a bankruptcy claim is a potential option, but federal officials caution that this process can be time-consuming and may only yield a partial refund.

The National Consumers League has urged affected travelers to retain all documentation related to their bookings, including receipts, booking confirmations, and cancellation notices. John Breyault, vice president of public policy at the League, noted the necessity for customers to take proactive measures to increase their chances of receiving their refunds.

To accommodate stranded passengers, both American and United Airlines are adjusting fleet schedules with plans to deploy larger aircraft and add more flights on overlapping routes, thus increasing capacity for those affected. American Airlines made a statement regarding their efforts to utilize larger planes on critical routes to assist as many passengers as possible. Additionally, Southwest Airlines is offering a status match for Spirit’s Silver and Gold status members, allowing them to participate in Southwest’s A-List program.

Spirit Airlines employees finding themselves stranded will be granted travel benefits, including access to open jump seats on other major carriers. American Airlines confirmed their commitment to providing transportation for displaced Spirit team members while also offering preferential interviews for former Spirit pilots and flight attendants to facilitate their job searches. To this end, American is coordinating recruiting events for former Spirit employees to help them transition into new roles.
