Police in eastern Austria have apprehended a 39-year-old suspect linked to a disturbing case involving rat poison found in HiPP baby food jars across Central Europe. The alarming situation came to public attention last month when authorities initiated a probe following the discovery of the contaminated baby food jar purchased at a supermarket in Eisenstadt on April 18.
In response to the incident, HiPP, the manufacturer headquartered in Pfaffenhofen, Germany, initiated a recall of specific baby food jars in Austria, Slovakia, and the Czech Republic. The company expressed its relief regarding the recent arrest and plans to provide further updates as more verified details become available. HiPP reassured its customers that the recall was not due to any defects or quality issues with their products, stating that all jars had left their facility in "perfect condition."
The Burgenland State Criminal Police Office launched an investigation after receiving reports of potential tampering. Authorities confirmed that a total of five tampered jars were seized before any consumer could ingest the contaminated contents. The jars in question contained a blend of carrots and potatoes specifically intended for infants aged five months and had been distributed through SPAR supermarkets, including SPAR, EUROSPAR, INTERSPAR, and Maximarkt locations in Austria. Vendors in Slovakia and the Czech Republic complied with the recall by removing all HiPP baby food jars from their shelves.
According to the Austrian Press Agency, the suspect is currently being questioned, although details regarding the investigation have not been publicly disclosed. The Burgenland public prosecutor’s office has labeled the situation as a case of suspected "intentional endangerment of the public." An expert report evaluating the toxicity of the rat poison is reportedly forthcoming, adding another layer of urgency to the investigation.
Interestingly, HiPP described itself as a victim of extortion, stating that an unidentified "blackmailer" had sent a message to a shared mailbox regarding the case. This prompted the company to notify law enforcement officials immediately, which resulted in the ongoing investigations to ensure public safety.
Police acknowledged the critical nature of the situation when a vigilant customer reported a jar that appeared to have been tampered with. Fortunately, no baby food had been consumed prior to the discovery, which potentially prevented serious health risks to infants.
