"RSF Drone Strike Kills Civilians Near Khartoum"

CAIRO (AP) – The Rapid Support Forces (RSF), a paramilitary group in Sudan, launched a drone attack that resulted in the deaths of at least five individuals in a civilian vehicle on the outskirts of Khartoum, according to a local Sudanese rights organization. The attack occurred on Saturday morning, targeting a vehicle traveling from the White Nile province to Omdurman, the sister city of Sudan's capital.

Emergency Lawyers, a human rights group monitoring violence against civilians, emphasized in a statement that this incident exemplifies the ongoing assault on civilians in populated areas and along public roads. Historically, Khartoum has managed to avoid direct engagements since being retaken by the Sudanese Armed Forces last year; however, there has been a recent uptick in sporadic strikes within the city.

Despite being embroiled in a conflict with the Sudanese Army for over three years, the RSF did not claim responsibility for this specific attack. In reaction to the drone strike, Emergency Lawyers condemned the assault and attributed responsibility to the RSF, calling it a "brazen violation of international humanitarian law."

The brutal conflict that erupted in April 2023 has led to a staggering death toll, with at least 59,000 casualties reported by the Armed Conflict Location & Event Data, an independent organization that tracks conflict-related incidents. Humanitarian organizations, however, caution that the actual number of fatalities could be significantly higher, citing the challenges of accessing conflict zones across the expansive nation.

This drone attack not only highlights the precarious security situation in Sudan but also underscores the plight of civilians caught in the ongoing violence. With continued hostilities, the safety of individuals traveling on public roads is increasingly jeopardized, raising alarm among rights groups and the international community. As the struggle between the RSF and the Sudanese Armed Forces persists, the ongoing targeting of civilians raises urgent questions regarding international protection measures and the enforcement of humanitarian laws in conflict scenarios.
