AMARILLO, Texas (AP) - In a tragic incident, police in Amarillo, Texas, are seeking the public's assistance in identifying suspects involved in a shooting that resulted in the deaths of two teenagers and injuries to ten others. The shooting occurred early Saturday morning around 2 a.m. at an apartment complex.
Authorities have reported that they are looking for two individuals who opened fire during a party at the complex. Residents in the vicinity have been urged to review any footage from doorbell and surveillance cameras that might capture unusual activity during the time around the shooting. As of now, details surrounding the motive for the attack have not been disclosed.
Surveillance footage released by the police portrays a chaotic scene, showing the two suspects firing shots at the exterior of the apartment. The video includes screams and commotion followed by additional gunfire. Witness Phillip Thrasher recounted, “When I looked outside and came outside it was complete chaos. I mean there were kids running everywhere, just screaming and running. They didn’t even know where they were running to, you know. And then moms and dads showed up and came to their kids’ rescues. The ones that could, the ones that couldn’t were so upset. I mean there was nothing you could do.”
Amarillo police confirmed that the two victims were teenagers, aged 16 and 17, who lost their lives in the shooting. The conditions of the ten injured individuals have not yet been publicly released, leaving the community concerned about the well-being of those hurt in the incident.
Police Chief Thomas Hover stated, “The investigation into this morning's events have identified that the suspects have an affiliation with the targeted location and were known to one of the occupants at the party.” This suggests that the shooting may have been targeted rather than random, as the suspects reportedly had connections to individuals attending the party.
According to the investigation, the individuals involved had been partying at a different location prior to the shooting and were asked to leave before moving on to the apartment complex where the tragic events unfolded. This escalation is indicative of underlying tensions that may have necessitated the initial ejection from the previous venue.
In response to previous violent events, particularly after separate shootings in Amarillo that claimed six lives on March 22, police officials have increased their patrol staffing. This adjustment highlights the ongoing concerns regarding public safety in the area and the commitment of law enforcement to prevent further violence.
As the investigation develops, authorities have left messages for police officials and for the management of the apartment complex situated approximately six miles (10 kilometers) west of downtown Amarillo, indicating a thorough outreach in securing information pertinent to the case.
The community remains in shock and mourning after these violent events, highlighting the need for increased vigilance and safety measures to protect residents, especially the youth, from senseless acts of violence.
