NEW YORK (AP) — Rob Base, an influential figure in the hip-hop scene and one half of the iconic Harlem duo Rob Base & DJ E-Z Rock, has passed away at the age of 59 after a prolonged battle with cancer. His real name was Robert Ginyard, and he was best known for the 1988 hit song “It Takes Two,” a pioneering track that successfully blended elements of hip-hop and house music, contributing to the mainstream acceptance of both genres.
Following the announcement of his death, a statement was released on his Instagram account highlighting Rob Base’s significant impact on music and culture. “Rob's music, energy, and legacy helped shape a generation and brought joy to millions around the world,” the post read. It further emphasized his roles beyond music as a devoted father, family member, and friend whose creative influence would be remembered fondly.
Tragically, Rob Base’s musical partner, Rodney “Skip” Bryce, known in the industry as DJ E-Z Rock, had passed away in 2014 at the age of 46 due to complications from diabetes. The two artists initially crossed paths in fifth grade in Harlem, where they developed a passion for music that was fueled by the success of another renowned Harlem-based group, Crash Crew. In 1987, they signed with Profile Records, one of the pioneering labels in hip-hop.
In 1988, the duo released “It Takes Two,” which became a massive hit, landing at No. 3 on the Billboard Hot 100 and topping the Billboard Hot Dance/Club Songs chart. The track's infectious energy and catchy lyrics resonated with audiences, leading to its enduring popularity. “It Takes Two” has since been sampled by numerous artists, including Snoop Dogg and The Black Eyed Peas, and has been featured in various films and television shows. The Recording Industry Association of America awarded the single a platinum certification, solidifying its status as a classic.
Following the success of their debut single, Rob Base & DJ E-Z Rock released another popular track titled “Get on the Dance Floor,” which similarly performed well on the club songs chart and further established their presence in the hip-hop genre. The duo's contributions to music, particularly in the late '80s and early '90s, played a significant role in shaping the sound of the era.
The loss of Rob Base is felt deeply across the music community, as fans and fellow artists remember him for his vibrant performances and the joy his music brought to audiences worldwide. His music not only entertained but also inspired countless other artists, ensuring that his legacy would continue to influence generations to come.
