Bonnie Tyler, the gravelly voiced, Grammy-nominated Welsh pop star best known for singing the chart-topping power ballad “Total Eclipse of the Heart” in 1983 and seeing new generations succumb to its bombastic charms during solar and lunar eclipses, has died

Bonnie Tyler, the gravelly voiced, Grammy-nominated Welsh pop star famed for her iconic power ballad "Total Eclipse of the Heart," has passed away at the age of 75. Her family announced that Tyler died unexpectedly in a hospital in Portugal, where she had been receiving treatment for an illness. Tyler had been hospitalized in May in Faro, Portugal, where she owned a home, for emergency intestinal surgery and was subsequently placed in an induced coma.

In a statement released on her website, her family expressed their heartbreak, stating, “Bonnie’s family and team are heartbroken to announce that Bonnie unexpectedly passed away last night in hospital in Portugal as a result of the illness that she was being treated for.” Tyler was known for her powerful singing ability, which earned her three Grammy nominations throughout her career.

Considered one of the standout tracks in pop music, "Total Eclipse of the Heart" topped the charts for four weeks after its release in 1983 and has since garnered over 1 billion streams, thanks in part to its resurgence during solar and lunar eclipses in 2017 and 2024. The song, which has become a cultural phenomenon, saw Tyler representing Britain at the Eurovision Song Contest in 2013, finishing in 19th place. In recognition of her contribution to music, Queen Elizabeth II awarded her an MBE in 2023.

The music video for "Total Eclipse of the Heart" has surpassed 1 billion views on YouTube. Music outlet Stereogum praised the song as an “extinction-level event rendered in musical form” in a 2020 retrospective, describing it as a “sheer spectacle” filled with overwhelming passion, fireworks, and thunder.

Throughout her career, "Total Eclipse of the Heart" remained a staple in pop culture, covered by various artists, including Nicki French in 1995 and Westlife in 2006. The song also found its way into several films and television shows, including a memorable scene in 2003’s "Old School" and a performance by One Direction on the U.K. version of "The X Factor" in 2010.

Early Life

Born as Gaynor Hopkins in Skewen, Wales, Tyler grew up as the daughter of a coal miner in public housing. She was one of six siblings and developed an early passion for music, influenced by iconic bands and artists like The Beatles, Janis Joplin, and Tina Turner. Her love for singing blossomed as she frequently practiced with her hairbrush in hand, which would later culminate in her unique vocal style.

After undergoing surgery in 1976 to remove nodules from her throat, Tyler emerged with her recognizable deep voice. She initially performed under the name Sherene Davis and caught the attention of talent scout Roger Bell, leading to her signing with RCA and adopting the stage name Bonnie Tyler. Her debut album, "The World Starts Tonight," was released in 1977 and included her first hit, "Lost in France."

"Total Eclipse of the Heart"

Jim Steinman, the songwriter and producer known for his work with Meat Loaf, introduced Tyler to the haunting ballad "Total Eclipse of the Heart." The song was featured on her fifth studio album, "Faster Than the Speed of Night," and the recording included contributions from E Street Band musicians. The lyrical theme revolves around lost love, with Tyler delivering a powerful performance enhanced by dramatic visuals in the music video, which became a staple of early MTV.

The album earned Tyler Grammy nominations, solidifying her place in the music industry, even if she never reached such heights again. Nevertheless, she continued to release hit singles, including "Holding Out for a Hero" and "Here She Comes," both from 1984.

Later Career

In 2019, Tyler released the album "Between the Earth and the Stars," which featured duets with artists like Rod Stewart and Cliff Richard. Additionally, she performed at a Vatican Christmas concert in the same year. Transitioning her sound, Tyler released a country-influenced album titled "Rocks and Honey" in 2013, which included the Eurovision entry "Believe in Me." She fondly recalled her experience representing the U.K. at Eurovision, noting the overwhelming excitement of performing behind the British flag.

In a notable collaboration, Tyler joined Joe Jonas's band DNCE for a performance on a cruise ship during a "Total Eclipse Cruise" in 2017, where they played her famous anthem as the moon eclipsed the sun.

Tyler was married to Robert Sullivan, a former Olympic judo competitor and property developer. Her legacy endures through her music, inspiring generations of fans and artists alike.
