"Troops Rescue 92 Abducted in Northeast Nigeria"

ABUJA, Nigeria (AP) — Ninety-two people who were abducted by jihadi extremists have been rescued by troops in Nigeria’s conflict-battered northeast region, the country’s military said Sunday

In a recent operation, Nigeria's military announced the successful rescue of 92 individuals who had been abducted by jihadi extremists in the northeastern region, specifically in Borno State. The rescue operation took place along the Buratai–Kamuya road in the Biu area, as reported by military spokesperson Sani Uba on Sunday.

Among those rescued were 52 males, 33 females, and seven children. The military detailed that the extremists were "forcibly herding" their victims off the road and into the bush when they were intercepted by Nigerian troops. Uba described how Operation HADIN KAI soldiers managed to converge on the terrorists with a well-coordinated effort, engaging them until the insurgents abandoned their captives and fled in confusion.

While the military confirmed the successful rescue, no details were provided regarding the duration of captivity for those rescued. The situation in Nigeria's northern region remains dire, with various militant groups, including Boko Haram and a faction aligned with the Islamic State group, operating in the area. These groups often collaborate with numerous criminal organizations that specialize in kidnapping for ransom, commonly referred to as "bandits."

The United Nations has reported that Nigeria's complex security crisis has resulted in the deaths of thousands of people. The recent rescue operation followed a significant uptick in military action against militant groups. Just last week, Nigeria announced a successful joint operation with the United States, which reportedly killed over 170 militants associated with the Islamic State group. Prior to this, the Nigerian military had confirmed the deaths of key extremist leaders, Abu Bakr al-Mainuki and Abd-al Wahhab, further highlighting the ongoing struggle against insurgency and terrorism in the region.

This latest development underscores the persistent challenges faced by Nigeria in addressing security threats and the ongoing efforts of its military to combat extremist groups. The humanitarian impact of these conflicts continues to rise, affecting countless lives and contributing to the broader instability in the region.
