Downtown Halifax has introduced a valuable resource for individuals seeking prompt access to non-urgent medical care. The new facility, known as the Citadel Health Home, is located on Dresden Row and has opened as a part-time mobile health clinic, according to Nova Scotia Health.
As announced recently, the clinic is designed for patients who are already connected to either a physician or nurse practitioner affiliated with Nova Scotia Health. It will offer services such as prescription renewals, consultations for sore throats, headaches, fever, cold or flu, and other non-urgent health concerns during after-hours services on selected days.
Jasmine Asad, a primary healthcare manager with Nova Scotia Health, emphasized the importance of this new service in a press release. She stated, “We know people can’t always wait to see their own family doctor or nurse practitioner. And sometimes they need to be seen in-person instead of virtually. Our clinic gives people on the peninsula another option for timely in-person care for common health concerns, right in their community.”
It is crucial to note that the Citadel Health Home is focused exclusively on non-urgent care, meaning it does not provide emergency services. The clinic will not order bloodwork or diagnostic imaging such as X-rays and ultrasounds, nor will it offer immunizations or complete medical forms.
Interestingly, despite its name, the majority of so-called mobile clinics like the Citadel Health Home operate out of existing healthcare facilities rather than actual mobile vehicles. Nova Scotia Health has termed these services as "mobile" because they adjust their locations based on community needs, demonstrating their commitment to accessible healthcare.
In summary, the new Citadel Health Home presents an essential solution for residents in downtown Halifax. With the ability to address a range of non-urgent health issues outside traditional office hours, this initiative aims to alleviate pressure on family doctors while ensuring that community members have timely access to necessary in-person care.
