"Google Unveils AI Shopping Features with Major Retailers"

NEW YORK (AP) — Google said Sunday that it is expanding the shopping features in its AI chatbot by teaming up with Walmart, Shopify, Wayfair and other big retailers to turn the Gemini app into a virtual merchant as well as an assistant

On Sunday, Google announced an expansion of the shopping capabilities in its AI chatbot, Gemini, as part of a collaboration with prominent retailers like Walmart, Shopify, and Wayfair. This partnership aims to transform Gemini into not just an assistant but also a virtual merchant, enhancing users' shopping experiences.

One of the key features of this new integration is an instant checkout function. This feature allows users to make purchases directly from the chatbot interface, utilizing various payment providers, thus eliminating the need to navigate away from the chat for a shopping experience. This development was revealed during the National Retail Federation's annual convention in New York, which focuses on the evolving role of artificial intelligence in e-commerce and its influence on consumer behavior.

John Furner, Walmart’s incoming president and CEO, highlighted the significance of this transition from traditional web or app searches to agent-led commerce, marking it as the next major evolution in retail. This shift is seen as essential as businesses adapt to an increasingly digital landscape driven by AI advancements.

Google's AI shopping feature operates by responding to user queries with product recommendations tailored to their needs. For instance, if someone inquires about equipment for a winter ski trip, Gemini will present options drawn from the inventories of participating retailers. Additionally, Walmart customers who link their Walmart and Gemini accounts will receive personalized recommendations that reflect their past purchases. Any items bought through the chatbot can be integrated with their existing online shopping carts at Walmart or Sam's Club.

The collaboration trend does not stop with Google; OpenAI and Walmart previously announced a similar partnership in October. This agreement allows ChatGPT members to utilize an instant checkout feature for shopping nearly all products available on Walmart's site, with the exception of fresh food items. This competitive environment has sparked a race among tech giants like Google, OpenAI, and Amazon to develop tools that facilitate seamless, AI-powered shopping experiences, enabling users to transition smoothly from browsing to purchasing without needing to visit a retailer's website.

Prior to the holiday shopping season, OpenAI also unveiled an instant checkout feature within ChatGPT, allowing customers to purchase from select retailers and Etsy sellers without leaving the application. According to Salesforce, a San Francisco-based software company, AI had a profound impact during the recent holiday shopping season, influencing approximately $272 billion, or 20% of all global retail sales, to some degree.

Currently, Google has stated that the AI-assisted shopping features in Gemini will only be available to U.S. users initially, with plans for an international rollout in the months ahead. This strategic move by Google signals a significant step towards integrating AI into the retail experience, promising a future where shopping can be more personalized and efficient through advanced technology.
