"Florida Bar Investigates Trump Aide Lindsey Halligan"

FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla

FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. (AP) – Lindsey Halligan, a former White House aide under President Donald Trump and a top federal prosecutor in Virginia, is now under investigation by the Florida Bar. Her time as acting U.S. attorney for the Eastern District of Virginia was brief but controversial. Halligan's appointment was challenged as unlawful, leading to a tumultuous period during which she pursued cases against Trump's political opponents.

The Campaign for Accountability, a nonprofit watchdog organization, had been pushing for the bar inquiry and recently published a letter confirming that the Florida Bar has a pending investigation into Halligan. A spokesperson from the Florida Bar also indicated that there is an open file on her but refrained from elaborating further due to the confidentiality of disciplinary cases.

Halligan's contentious tenure began in September when she replaced Erik Siebert, her predecessor, who was urged to step down amid demands for the prosecution of high-profile critics of Trump, namely former FBI Director James Comey and New York Attorney General Letitia James. Halligan, despite being one of Trump’s attorneys, had no prior federal prosecutorial experience, which raised concerns regarding her qualifications for the role.

Despite securing indictments against both Comey and James, Halligan faced immediate backlash as Comey’s legal team highlighted numerous alleged irregularities that plagued the grand jury proceedings. Notably, a judge publicly reprimanded Halligan for "fundamental misstatements of the law," including her incorrect assertion regarding Comey's Fifth Amendment right not to testify.

As matters progressed, a separate judge dismissed both cases following the determination that Halligan's appointment had not been legally valid. Consequently, she departed from her role in January, marking a turbulent exit from a position considered one of the U.S. Justice Department's most prestigious.

The complaint filed with the Florida Bar mirrors these events, emphasizing Halligan's potential violations of professional conduct rules. It suggests she may have misrepresented her standing by continuing to identify herself as the acting U.S. attorney after a court ruling confirming her illegal appointment.

The bar complaint accuses Halligan of issuing "false or misleading communications regarding herself and her services," a serious allegation that could impact her professional career significantly.

While Halligan has not publicly responded to the request for comment about the ongoing investigation, the situation reflects broader controversies surrounding her appointment and the legal proceedings she managed. The Florida Bar's inquiry will delve into these issues, examining Halligan's actions during her controversial tenure.

This investigation comes at a time when scrutiny of legal professionals, particularly those in significant public service roles, is crucial. The outcome could have lasting implications not only for Halligan's career but also for the accountability standards expected of legal practitioners in the United States.
